Which Air Con Units?
I am going to buy new Air Con this summer. Advice on which are best would be useful and which to avoid even better.

There was news a few years ago to avoid Chinese made units. Anyone experienced problems with these? Any makes to avoid?

Is there any new technology coming along worth waiting for, new designs or styles? What about solar powered Air Con?

I would buy one of the inverter type as they are more cost efficient to run, personally i would buy beko or arcelik brands as the back up is very good, and I would buy direct from one of their shops.

The solar ones you refer to do not cool using the solar panel, that only operates the internal fan at best, the compressor/pump outside would need most of the roof covered with solar pv panels to operate.

Have to agree with Martin on the inverter type. They are more expensive to buy initially but the cost saving comes when it is running. Something to do with the fact that the motor starts slowly and then slows down when the room comes to temperature. Normal air con motors are either off or running fast and this uses more electricity.

I have been told that with the inverter type it is critical to get the right size unit for the room. If it is undersized you will end up using more electric than ordinary air con.

I quite agree with buying inverter type aircon and Arcelik or beko because of service.
Also at a later stage when solar electric panel reduce in price you could easily convert them to operate with solar electric, at this time you would need a big pot of money to do it, if you want more info and prices on solar powered aircon there is a specialist engineer in Ortaca who is doing this.

To completely power an aircon unit of less than 2kw at full sun ie around mid day would require around 20 square metres of panels, as the sun moves around the panels start to lose efficiency so you would possibly need an extra 20% to power it until about 4 or 5 pm after that its back to mains power, typically the panels without framing, controls and installation would cost about £5000 (in the uk)

this info is based on my talking to guys who fit this stuff and not my own expertise, I am just a lowly electrical contractor !

Google on this showed LG doing a hybrid Solar/Mains unit, but no costs or performance figures. More importantly, does not seem to be available in Turkey.

You are spot on Yali, power is power--there are no free kilowatts in the world, imagine the size of panel neeeded to cope with the starting load of a traditional motor :114mf:

As you rightly say, Beko/Arcelik---inverter models are the best bet.

the Lg model, states solar assisted, with a panel that would give 70 watts of power at its max
that would be about 3% of the running costs, the panel would cost around £400 alone

The engineer in Ortaca has an aircon unit in his office/shop running off 1 panel but of course things are not as simple as that, to keep it going at night you need batteries and an inverter. I do have some example prices ranging from 5,000 euro for 2.2 kw per day to 14,000 euro for 4.3 kw per day as you can see it is jolly expensive.

I see Arcelik do a 1x4 inverter system with one external unit running four internal coolers. Any advantage with this? As I am starting from scratch in a 240m2 apartment I can look at all options.

I agree with the others buy Arcelik. I did and haven't regretted it for 1 minute. They seem reasonable to run although i dont use them all the time even in mid summer. In a previous property I had cheaper units and was forever getting them fixed.
Buy the best and you'll be pleased.

I would have liked to have done this, not sure on running costs though when only 1 room is being cooled,

i will talk to my aircon mate later, if i can get hold of him

the benefits are only having 1 compressor, is the house pre piped and wired ?

It is wired for individual units in each room, although I will only use air con in 3 or 4 rooms. I am having some building alterations done so extra plumbing could be feasible at little cost.

I would go for individual units as you would be unlikely to use them all at the same time, the 4 in 1 units would be good for an office where you have individual rooms but in a home you would probably only use the aircon when you are in a particular room.

You would not have to use them all at once, but might save on having just one external unit.

We use the Arcelik brand of air conditioning units.
We must say the service from Arcelik seems excellent so far.

We bought 4 Arcelik A/C units 6 years ago . 2/9000 units .1 /12000 unit & 1 18000 unit . apart from normal cleaning they are all still working fine ,as are the roof units .

not sure about this ? ,as we have 4 compressor units [1 for each indoor unit ] We had a problem once with 1 of the roof units [out of action for 1 week in 90f temps . the benefit was we could still run 3 other indoor units seeing as we had 4 on the roof . What if you are running all indoor units off 1 roof unit and it packs up in 100f temps ? .
