The football World Cup in South Africa will be played in front of fewer than half of the expected number of foreign fans.
That's according to the governing body Fifa, which expects to make a marginal loss on the 2010 World Cup.

If you look at the cost of packages on specialist sports tourism websites, you can understand why foreign supporters aren't attending. When in the grip of economic crisis, people have other priorities to spend their money on. When the Cricket World Cup was held in the Caribbean, most of the stadiums were half empty and the ticket price was too expensive for locals to afford to attend. I would imagine it will be exactly the same in South Africa with half empty stadiums and the locals not being able to afford a ticket!

It will be a pity if it is a flop

Its amazing what the country has went through and their people deserve such a wonderful event

Political decision, not a football one.
Done with the absolute best of intentions, but fiscally flawed.

Their people do deserve a wonderful event Phillip, but South Africa is still a divided nation, now by wealth, and the poor population won't get a look in and certainly won't be able to afford to support it. Perhaps the super rich ex-pats like Mark Thatcher will support it!!!!

Most foreign supporters will probably be mugged or murdered before they get anywhere near a stadium.

Fifa has admitted that South Africa is not yet ready to host the 2010 World Cup, with just over three months to go before kick off.
