In Ukraine, this summer means blood and sirens – but fishing and the theatre go on

fishing.jpg

The city of Kremenchuk is looking for blood. Last week, two Russian missiles blew apart a large shopping and entertainment centre where around a thousand people were spending the afternoon. The exact number of those killed is still not known, but hundreds of people were at the epicentre of the explosion and of some of them, not even fragments are left. The number of wounded is known, though. The survivors were left without arms, without legs. And they need blood.

This tragedy has given a new impetus to blood donation efforts. Blood is needed everywhere in Ukraine – wherever Russian missiles and shells explode, wherever wounded soldiers are brought from the frontlines...

Our foreign correspondents bring you the stories that matter - from Ukraine and around the world.

A Russian ice-hockey star has been forcibly drafted to the army in an apparent attempt to prevent him transferring to a team based in America.
Ivan Fedotov, who was named the best goalkeeper of the KHL league at the end of last season and won silver for Russia at the Beijing Olympics, was detained in St Petersburg on Friday in an elaborate operation that involved plain clothes security agents posted outside his home and the arena where he was training.
The 25-year-old old player said at the end of the season in April he would be moving to the United States in summer to play for the NHL’s Philadelphia Flyers as his contract with CSKA, an ice-hockey team affiliated with the Russian Defence Ministry, ran out.
News website Fontanka quoted security sources saying that prosecutors in St Petersburg launched proceedings against the hockey star for draft dodging as his deferral that he received while he was with CSK ran out.

Prosecutors have not confirmed or denied the reports.
The Olympic medalist was detained on Friday as he left the ice arena where he was doing a shoot for a TV channel.
Anna Andronova, the channel’s reporter who walked out of the building with Mr Fedotov, told Match TV there were about ten people waiting outside:
“The first thing that caught my eye was two people with balaclavas and camouflage. The rest of them were plainclothes.”
About ten men reportedly surrounded Mr Fedotov, put him in an unmarked van and whisked him away.
Alexander Ponomarev, the hockey star’s lawyer, said over the weekend his client had been drafted illegally.
“Ivan has not been summoned to the draft office or dodged draft,” he told Sports.ru.
“There are no reasons to draft him.”
In Russia, men aged 18 to 27 can be drafted into the army for one year unless they have a deferral, typically linked to their place of study or work.
Mr Fedotov, who won silver with the Russian national team at this year’s Beijing Olympics, reportedly felt unwell following his detention and was taken to a military hospital where he disappeared from on Sunday.
Russian sports daily Sport Express on Monday posted photos of Mr Fedotov dressed in a military T-shirt, saying he had been taken to the Russian Navy’s training in Severodvinsk above the Arctic Circle.
Mr Fedotov’s plight caused a shockwave in the Russian sports community
“Security men with no insignia snatch a person in broad daylight and take him somewhere: This is not a military draft but a simple abduction,” Dmitry Fyodorov, a sports commentator, said on a daily talk show on Match TV on Monday.
Few players, however, have dared to speak out publicly on his behalf.
When asked if he wanted to make a comment about Mr Fedotov, NHL star Alexander Ovechkin, one of Russia’s best-known hockey players, told reporters over the weekend: “No. Why?”
Mr Fedotov is expected to spend three months in military training in Severodvinsk before he would get shipped to a permanent base.
Several Russian media outlets named Novaya Zemlya, an archipelago above the Arctic circle known as a nuclear testing site, as the likeliest destination.
Russian professional athletes have been free to play wherever they chose since the fall of the Soviet Union, and Mr Fedotov’s ordeal brought back the memories of the late Soviet Union when athletes including hockey stars had to defect from their teams during international competitions abroad.

Idea.jpg The best protection Ukraine could have would be annexing to Poland & getting a NATO umbrella.

That would bring a speedy end to this senseless war.

What's the current plan, orderly withdraw from areas whilst awaiting further heavy weapons, regroup then attack?
I dont think Putin needs to gather intel on what weapons are coming.........the lists are advertised on the TV every now and then.

Ukraine asks Turkey to probe three more Russian ships carrying grain

Extract:
Ukraine officials have asked Turkey to hold three more Russian ships transporting grain from the occupied south, Reuters reported, citing official documents. Last week, Turkish authorities detained the first Russian cargo ship taking grain, about 700,000 tons, from the port of Berdyansk.

In a June 13 letter, which hasn’t previously been reported, the Ukrainian prosecutor general’s office asked Turkey’s justice ministry to investigate and provide evidence on the three named ships it suspects have been involved in transporting grain allegedly stolen from recently occupied Ukrainian territories, such as Kherson.

The letter, which Reuters reviewed, said the ships travelled from Crimea’s main grain terminal in Sevastopol in April and May and pressed Ankara to obtain documentation about their cargo and arrival at Turkish ports. Russia annexed Crimea in 2014.

SBU detained correctors of enemy missile strikes in Lviv, Kyiv and Donetsk regions

"Since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion, the Security Service has reported suspicions of more than 760 Russian citizens. The exposed criminals are involved in waging an aggressive war, war crimes, and subversive activities against our state. Counterintelligence work is constantly underway to identify persons who are assisting the enemy on the territory of Ukraine.

So, in the end of June, counterintelligence agents of SBU exposed and detained the agent of the Russian Federation who corrected rocket attacks on the Yavoriv military range in the Lviv region.

The operatives of the special service established that the information was passed to the enemy by a former KGB officer. He sent the exact locations marked on the map to the curator through a specially hidden chat in the Telegram channel.

For reconstruction work in Ukraine an all party group of Irish politicians have proposed countries adopting different areas in Ukraine as their own specific project and target to have restored asap

I reckon it's a good idea to have some creativity and even competition between donor nations to get things rebuilt fast as possible

Makes a lot of sense and no chance of dodgy contractors - otherwise projects could be made piecemeal and sub standard.

Sounds more than reasonable but it feels like the cart is being put before the horse at the moment. The bombing and fighting needs to be stopped first.

Ukraine has withdrawn from some areas and is advancing in others (ie Kherson).

Why is the West not keeping the information about the weapon supply to Ukraine private?

"I am sure some is kept private. For Ukraine to use at just the right moment. But most is not. As Russia slowly runs out of missiles, tanks and ammunition, the West wants Russia to know the supply chain is wide open.

Why Ukraine loves Boris

"The Mayor of Ukrainian Black Sea port city Odesa announced last week that he was making British Prime Minister Boris Johnson an honorary citizen. This was not the first time Ukrainian officials have sought to show their appreciation for the UK leader. A number of Ukrainian towns and villages have already announced plans to unveil Boris Johnson streets. Meanwhile, when the British PM survived a recent Westminster no confidence vote, senior government figures in Kyiv flooded social media with congratulatory posts.

Ukrainian businesses have also been capitalizing on the wave of Boris mania sweeping the country. One particularly creative Kyiv cafe has seen business boom thanks to the launch of a Boris Johnson croissant, which comes complete with a vanilla ice cream topping in homage to his signature mop of blond hair.

This enthusiasm for the British politician appears to be shared by the Ukrainian general public. A poll published by UK peer Lord Ashcroft on June 28 gave Johnson a 90% favorable rating among Ukrainians, making him the most popular foreign politician in the country and placing him just 3% behind Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Notably, Johnson’s poll result was more than double that of French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz...

The EU is preparing a plan in case of a complete cessation of Russian gas supplies. In two weeks, the European Commission will submit an emergency action plan in the event of the interruption and/or complete termination of Russian gas supplies. The plan will find ways to provide gas to the most vulnerable countries and sections of the population stated Ursula von der Leyen. To eliminate dependence on Russian fossil fuels, the European Commission has presented the RePower EU package, which has three components. The first involves the diversification of supplies from Russia in favor of more reliable and trustworthy suppliers. The second is increasing energy efficiency, which is a very powerful tool. The third is massive investment in renewable energy sources, which involves investing up to €300B in implementing the European Green Course.
Ukrainian military personnel have arrived in Britain for training. The first rotation of the Ukrainian military arrived in Great Britain for training, announced the UK Minister of Defense, Ben Wallace. The training is part of an innovative program that aims to train up to 10,000 Ukrainian recruits. The training will occur at the military training grounds in the northeast, southwest, and southeast regions. According to Wallace, the Ukrainian military will train using methods based on basic Great Britain military training. It includes weapons training, battlefield first aid, field techniques, patrol tactics, and training in the laws of armed conflict. Each course will last several weeks.

EU
The EU is developing a legal basis for the confiscation of Russian assets. The European Union is developing legislation allowing the seizure of sanctioned Russian assets and using them for the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine, said Ursula von der Leyen. She added that the conference in Lugano, Switzerland, was very successful, as different approaches were proposed for the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine. The development of legislation for the legal confiscation of Russian assets in the European Union was also confirmed by the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola. "No option can be ruled out. All possible ways and sources for the reconstruction of Ukraine must be considered," Metsola said

Doing repairs is a bit different to rebuilding cities and infrastructure.

Ukraine
There’s a French documentary circulating about Macron/Putin’s phone calls. By all accounts plenty of internal backslapping by Macrons team.
Macron thought he had secured an agreement from Putin to meet with Biden in Geneva.......four days later Russia invaded Ukraine.
Interesting that Ukraine’s President wouldn’t have been at that meeting, says it all to me.

As said we are getting together to repair and rebuild as best we are able but many buildings are beyond the capability of ordinary citizens to rebuild & outside assistance is needed.

But the point of your post is unclear & I still think the Irish solution is best unless you can suggest a better one??

And what exactly does it say to you? That they were prepared to partition Ukraine unilaterally?
That's been tried before and it never ends well :(

What it says to me is what I’ve always thought, this’ll be sorted out between the US & Russia (if ever), not Ukraine, not Germany, not France, not Europe but the US and Russia. The rest are just “bit players”.

Do you still think that this mess can be sorted diplomatically and that Ukraine is just a bit player in deciding the future of its own nation?

Zelensky will never agree to ceding territory to Russia and even if he did do you really believe that Putin will hold to any agreement? He will regroup & the war will be on again - and not only in Ukraine, then to Poland, Belarus & the Baltics ! Then what - WW3?

Appeasement is for fools and cowards & Zelensky is neither.
----------------------------------------------------------------

In 1994 Russia signed the Budapest Memorandum. Let’s see what Russia agreed...

The United States of America, the Russian Federation, and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, reaffirmed their obligation to refrain from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of Ukraine, and that none of their weapons will ever be used against Ukraine except in self- defense or otherwise in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations.

Any agreement with Russia is not worth the paper it is printed on.
