Parliament sets up commission on mucilage as efforts continue

Extract :
A parliamentary decision on the establishment of a commission to investigate the causes of the mucilage problem in Turkish seas and to determine measures to be taken has been published in the Official Gazette.

The commission that will carry out the research will be composed of 19 members, the working period of the commission will be three months, and will be stationed outside of Ankara if necessary, according to the decision.

Turkish authorities this week announced a 22-point action plan to clear a surge of mucilage, which covers several parts of the Marmara Sea.

A Ruling Party and the Boss deflection, away from the countries present economic woes, and on to some other subject regarding their own old ex-Belediye IBB Istanbul before it fell to the popular opposition and rival CHP Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu they would like to smear.

It's no coincidence on losing Istanbul that Central Government has cut the cities budget and Govt banks are reluctant as they were before to give IBB Istanbul loans for projects, with the Council having to apply overseas ...

Istanbul turns to foreign funding as state banks close their doors to city

As I read it, the surface coating is bad but there is a lot on the seabed also, I can see them skimming the surface, but what to do with the sea bed? The Surface skim, disposal of is also a bit of a mystery, highly polluted with heavy metals etc :(

Instead of trying to make or take some political advantage. RTE should approve on Turkeys behalf the Paris Agreement on climate, in cutting down on carbon emissions to reduce global temperatures inc sea.

Baris Salihoglu, head of METU's Institute of Maritime Sciences, said it was hard to know what exactly was causing the sudden surge. But he told DW that pollution from organic compounds like nitrogen and phosphorus, as well as climate change had certainly played a part.

"We know that the [water] temperature in Marmora has increased by 2 to 2.5 degrees [Celsius/up to 4.5 degrees Fahrenheit] over the past 20 years, above the global average," Salihoglu said.

He said that other stressors like increased pollution from the surrounding watershed over the past half century — from agricultural or industrial runoff, for example, or the tons of sewage produced by more than 20 million people living around the sea — and overfishing have led to a loss in biodiversity and weakened the ecosystem. That has made the sea more susceptible to problems like marine mucilage. "It cannot tolerate these kinds of shocks," Salihoglu said.

That's the least of their problems, now the brown algae is here smells like rotten eggs and makes the water acidity. It happened in Mexico not so long ago and closed the beaches and made holiday makers cancel holiday's.

Turkey has fined 51 companies for polluting the Sea of Marmara and contributing to the accumulation of so-called ‘sea snot’, said Environment and Urbanisation Minister Murat Kurum.

“We decisively continue to implement criminal procedures, including closures to those who pollute our environment and our seas,” Kurum said on Twitter on Monday.

Turkey has removed 2,100 cubic metres of the mucilage during an ongoing clean-up operation, Kurum said.

Researchers ramp up efforts to determine how to clean up mucilage

Extract:
Turkish researchers have stepped up their efforts to determine the reasons behind mucilage, which has covered swathes of the Marmara Sea, south of Istanbul, and effective methods to clean it up, as authorities continue their intense cleaning works.

A team from Istanbul University has succeeded in cleaning mucilage formed on the surface of the Marmara Sea with marine bacteria in its natural environment.

The pilot study was initiated at an Istanbul harbor in order to eliminate mucilage in its natural environment with beneficial bacteria.

Expert warns of threat mucilage poses to small boats in Dardanelles

Extract:
Mucilage covers all living things at the bottom of the Aegean Sea, Ayaz said, adding that mucilage also creates a big shadow in the water and completely blocks the sunlight.

"The water is still around 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit). We think that mucilage production still continues in (the Sea of) Marmara since temperature does not rise above 20 degrees Celsius. So, we estimate that mucilage formation in the sea will end when the water temperature rises to 22-24 Celsius (71-75 Fahrenheit)," he said.

Noting that small boats face problems since they take water near the surface, Ayaz said that the mucilage, brought with water, clogs the water filters and affects the operation of the boat engine.

Turkey to use oxygenation technology to protect Marmara Sea from mucilage

Extract:
Turkey will use oxygenation technology to protect the Sea of Marmara from mucilage, also known as sea snot, as part of the country's clean-up campaign launched earlier this month, said the environment minister on June 21.

"On Tuesday, June 22, we will deliver oxygen to the depth of 30 meters of the Sea of Marmara from 4 points in Körfez, Kocaeli, and another area in Pendik Marina," Murat Kurum announced on Twitter.

He went on to say that the aim is to increase the dissolved oxygen in the depths of the Sea of Marmara with advanced oxygenation devices.

Mucilage cleaning works in the Turkish seas finally paying off

Extract:
With the efforts in line with a massive cleanup campaign launched by the authorities to eliminate the problem of mucilage that has severely threatened the marine biome finally paying off, the Turkish seas are coming back to life once again.

Following extensive works and the effect of prevailing winds, the mucilage density decreased in Istanbul’s Caddebostan coast and Kurbağalıdere, a narrow creek extending into Kadıköy district.

As mucilage can reproduce on the shores due to the current and wind, the cleaning efforts continue without interruption, authorities noted.

It was also observed that the teams succeeded in cleaning mucilage formed on the surface of the Çanakkale shores, but it was effective from time to time on the bays of the province in the Aegean Sea.

Mucilage density decreases in Marmara Sea thanks to cleanup efforts

Extract:
The marine mucilage density has decreased in the southern shores of the Marmara Sea thanks to the efforts in line with a massive cleanup campaign launched by the authorities to eliminate the problem.

Residents of coastal provinces were able to fish on shores, swim in the sea and take a walk on beaches after the mucilage cleaning works that have been going on for about four weeks finally paid off.

The landlocked sea fell victim to the slimy substance over the past few months. Mostly engulfing areas near the shore, mucilage threatened to suffocate marine life and dealt a blow to fishing and swimming activities.

Authorities launch second phase in fight against mucilage

Extract:
After weeks of meticulous efforts as part of a cleanup campaign to clear a mass of mucilage from the Marmara Sea, Turkish authorities are moving to a second phase in the fight against the jelly-like layer of slime that developed on the surface of the sea.

The Environment and Urbanization Ministry launched a study looking into how to decrease the impact of phosphates on the Marmara Sea.
