It's interesting to know there are 500,000 Turks living in the UK - I wonder how many UK citizens currently live in Turkey?

The largest Turkish population outside Turkey by a long way is Germany with 2.8m, some estimates even put it at 4m. Many of these Turks are second or third generation however and do not know Turkey.

Other countries with a significent Turkish diaspora are;

Bulgaria - 800,000 France - 500,000
Iraq - 500,000 US - 500,000
Holland - 400,000 Iran - 400,000
N Cyprus - 260,000 Austria - 250,000
Belgium - 200,000 Uzbekistan - 200,000
Syria - 190,000 Australia - 150,000
Greece - 130,000 Saudi Arabia - 120,000
Switzerland - 100,000 Russia - 100,000
Macedonia - 80,000 Denmark - 70,000
Sweden - 70,000 Azerbajan - 50,000
Canada - 50,000 Romania - 44,500
Egypt - 40,000 Israel - 20,000
Kosovo - 20,000 Norway - 15,000
Italy - 14,500 Japan - 10,000

I read an article last year that said there was now over 5 million “Euro-Turks”, the same population as a small European country.

I certainly don’t consider myself old but things have changed so much just in my short time. When I grow up in South Shield we were the only Anglo-Turkish family in the in the whole of South Tyneside. I remember when I was young I’d look in the phone directory to see I could find any other Turks but I could never find any.

Even in north London the area where I live was largely Greek Cypriot, but is now dominated by Turks, the Turkish community has grow massively during the late 80’s /early 90’s due to the troubles in south east Turkey and is now one to the biggest Turkish communities in Europe.

When my uncle moved to Germany in the Late 60’s, he wrote a book called “Blood on the steps”, it was the first book of its kind to look at racism towards the Turkish immigrants in Germany during that time. It became a best seller in both Turkey and Germany, apparently he is still listed in the International who’s who.
