Turkey warns Greek Cypriots over projected offshore drilling.

Drilling vessel arrive in 'so-called' exclusive economic zone Greek Cypriots licenses companies

Turkey on Friday warned the Greek Cypriots over its "unilateral hydrocarbon-related activities" in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Turkey’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement saying the unilateral actions are a "disregard of the inalienable rights on natural resources of the Turkish Cypriot people, the co-owners of the island."

The statement follows the arrival of a drilling vessel at block 6 of the "so-called" exclusive economic zone to start activities within the framework of the licenses issued by the Greek Cypriot Administration.

NATO v NATO? No.
UN calls for calm? Yes.
Turkey ignores the UN & screams that everyone hates Muslims.
Brussels steps in after weeks of silence calling for dialogue & calm, Turkey tells them to swivel.
EU threatens sanctions on Turkey, needs agreement from all members.
Two years later, still talking about it...........

Amazes me how people scream about the lack of democracy in the EU , then rant again when democracy is seen in action , but seen to take time , discussion and debate at the UN .

Selective dictatorships ?

Steve.

More interesting than EU, is the scenario that it must be testing the strength and resolve of the new evolving friendship between the Ankara Government and Putin.

The Russians have already taken a hit by restraining their Energy Companies in bidding for licenses and involvement in the G/ Cypriots offshore fields. Not wanting to risk Turkey for G/Cyprus.

The problem is how much is Putin willing to lose for his new ally, as the Russians have invested heavily to influence the Greek Cypriot Government, with a massive Russian bailout loan, that kept the G/ Cypriots afloat, during the "crisis". These repayments need to be met, and it was surely hoped the revenues from the new Greek Cypriot offshore fields would meet the shortfall debt.

Plus Putin hoped with his newly bought Greek Cypriot influence it would guarantee his Energy windfall from his future Syrian offshore licenses, which is now more likely will come to fruition, and pay for his war in Syria he couldn't really afford. Would have been pipelined through G/Cyprus to Europe. Now, all put at risk by this new ally's Turkey's threat.

One of the first issues to be sorted out after the Turkish/Russia fallout was the gas pipeline from Russia to Turkey. IMO neither Turkey nor Russia are going to let that slip by them again, whatever dispute happens between the Greeks & Turks.

I read yesterday that the Greek government have demanded/asked that their Supreme Court looks again at the courts decision not to send Turkish pilot's back to Turkey (Turkey demanding their return). Thats interesting, because if the courts reverse that decision then surely thats a government interfering with the courts & thats exactly the accusation being laid at Eastern European countries doors by Brussels.

Putin doesn't care about Cyprus enough to make it a big deal. He has successfully bypassed the smaller E European former soviet satellites with his new pipeline directly into Germany. He is playing the blessed saint Angela both ends up as she still has not been able to form a government 3 months after inconclusive elections back in September '17.
Germany is currently weak and their political leaders care more about making a political deal for brownie points by providing cheap fuel. This going to further weaken European solidarity.
Meanwhile the eastern European states can go shiver as a form of revenge for daring to leave the empire.

Hang on! It's only 2 weeks ago that Turkey sent warships to block Italian drilling rigs from setting up off the Greek Cypriot side of the island.
