todays word is a Nasrettin Hoca story
Here is one of the stories of Nasrettin Hoca...he is very famous, all Turks from childhood know him and his humour.
This is a simple version but you can learn a lot from it...(unless you are at the very beginning of learning) i hope my translation and explanations will be a help to you..
ive split it up into three paragraphs.

Nasrettin ve Kapı...Nasrettin and the door.

1)Annesi, ona: "Nasrettin, ben tarlaya gidiyorum. Ben evden uzakdayken sen kapının yanında otur ve hep gözetle'' dediği zaman Nasrettin küçük bir çocuktu

2)Kapının yanında oturdu. Bir saat sonra dayılarından birisi geldi ve Nasrettin'e "Annen nerede?" diye sordu.
"Tarlada," diye cevap verdi Nasrettin.
Dayısı, "Karımla ben bu akşam sizi ziyaret edeceğiz. Gidip annene söyle!" dedi.

3) Nasrettin düşünmeğe başladı: "Annem bana hep kapıyı gözetlememi söyledi. şimdi ne yapayım?" Düşündü taşındı, ve sonra kapıyı yerinden söküp çıkardı, sırtına yükleyip annesini görmeğe gitti.

Read it a few times..try and work it out..its not difficult (unless you are just starting out to learn)

1a)Annesi,ona ..anne+S+i..his mother..o+N+A..to him
the S and the N are both buffers to keep the vowels apart.
his mother to him.

1b)''Nasrettin -ben tarlaya- gidiyorum.''..tarla-Y-a....
Nasrettin- i -field to- going am.

1c)''Ben- evden -uzakdayken -sen- kapının -yanında -otur -ve hep- gözetle''
''İ -house from- far when -you -door its- near to- sit -and all the time - watch.
ev-den..house from
uzak+da+yken..far away from..the suffix .ken or yken..means when
kapı-..nın..this suffix denotes possession and here its the door of the house
ev-(den )...kapının...house from... its door
yanında..at its side.
otur..sit
ve hep...and always..and all the time.
gözetle...keep an eye on..to watch over.
dediği zaman...at the time she said it
de-mek means to say..here its de+diĞ+i ..using the DİK participle..the K/Ğ as its followed by a vowel...
the past tense of demek would be dedi..she said...but dedi zaman(she said time) isnt correct..dediği zaman....the time it was said ...as you can see is better grammar.
''dediği zaman Nasrettin küçük bir çocuktu.''
at the time she said it Nasrettin small a child was.

phew.....thats the first paragraph. take a breath and lets plod on!!

2)Kapanın yanında oturdu. Bir saat sonra dayılarından birisi geldi -ve Nasrettin'e "Annen nerede?" diye sordu.
"Tarlada," diye cevap verdi Nasrettin.
Dayısı, "Karımla ben bu akşam sizi ziyaret edeceğiz. Gidip annene söyle!" dedi.

2a)kapanın yanında oturdu
door next to sat he
2b)bir saat sonra dayılarından birisi geldi
one hour later one of their uncles came
dayı..maternal uncle..
dayı-ları-ndan birisi..literally uncle from one of them
birisi.. one of them
2c)....ve Nasrettin'e''Annen nerede?'' diye sordu
and Nasrettin to 'where is your mother?'saying he asked.
diye..saying..sordu..he asked...
2d)'Tarlada diye cevap verdi Nasrettin'
at the field saying reply gave Nasrettin...
this form..diye cevap..diye sordu..etc..is used when telling a story.

Dayısı, "Karımla ben bu akşam sizi ziyaret edeceğiz. Gidip annene söyle!" dedi.
His uncle(said) ''my wife with me this evening to you visit we will make. Go and mother to say!'' he said.

and now we come to the last paragraph..you must be still with me if you're reading this...

and this is the punch line.

3) Nasrettin düşünmeye başladı: "Annem bana hep kapıyı gözetlememi söyledi. şimdi ne yapayım?" Düşündü taşındı, ve sonra kapıyı yerinden söküp çıkardı, sırtına yükleyip annesini görmeğe gitti.

3a)Nasrettin düşünme-y-e başladı..to think he started..düşünme a verbal noun which can take case endings and personal endings. and though it looks like a negative the content of the sentence clears that up.
3b)''Annem- bana- hep- kapıyı- gözetlememi söyledi''
my mother- to me- always- the door -me watching-it- she said.
gözleme-m-i..watching -i -it... another verbal noun...this time taking a personal pronoun.M and the case suffix İ

3c) Şimdi ne yapayım?'
'Now what do i do?

3d)Düşündü taşındı..
he thought and pondered

3e)ve -sonra- kapıyı- yerinden -söküp çıkardı,- sırtına yükleyip annesini görmeye gitti.
and- later- the door- its place from- he took it apart and pulled it out,
on his back- he loaded it and- mother his- to see- he went.

a typical turk!!
i hope you enjoyed it...the complaints box is open if not!! :bash:

next 'Word will be a basic one..from the beginning.

Oh Shirley ,this is a nice one, but a difficult one as well , especially the first paragraph gives me a headache, but after a few readings (well after about four times, LOL), I started to grasp it

But is a nice and stupid story,.... hèhè

Nice beginning of the year.........

I also know an (easy) story about Hoca :

- Hoca bak, bir tepsi börek gidiyor (look Hoca, there a plate of börek is passing by)
- Bana ne (what do I have to do with this ?)
- Ama size gidiyor (but it is coming to you)
- Söyle, sana ne ? ( so,then why is it your business ?)

I think this is a nice one, especially for the using of bana ne and sana ne
