Of course its blackmail but dare the EU implement withholding Covid recovery funding?
I'm sure I read/heard that one of the issues that the EU are not happy about is, Polish Judges having their immunity removed. since when do Judges have immunity?

Just like UK judges. Judges are subject to the law in the same way as any other citizen, but Judges are given immunity from prosecution when carrying out acts in performance of their judicial function, they also benefit from immunity from being sued for defamation.

Of course , contravening a law is tantamount to a blackmail punishment ,, do as the law demands or PAY. a penalty .

Are Brexiteers not just happy with us leaving the EU or is it ideological ??? wanting to see the EU project fail to justify Brexit ? As they seem to revel in one of our biggest customers system having problems in being challenged .... which I suppose is in keeping with their Kamikaze attitude in making yourself poorer ...

Can’t speak for others but I never voted for the EU to fail, just for us to leave.

No not really

If the govt needs money they can just print it. There's no gold standard any more so we do not need gold reserves to prop up the pound

The problem with this sort of quantitative easing is it's inflationary and would normally result in the collapse of the value in the Pound

However if ALL countries are simply printing money, then you can get away with it.

We were bankrupted by Brexit back when Corona was just a piss week beer.

There was no money (in real terms) before Brexit and after wasting an estimated £130 billion pounds year to date January 2020 due to Brexit, we sure as hell had no money after it.

Good because the last time the EU failed, it ended up in WW2

It was Germany who left at that time resulting in the then League of Nations collapsing.

Ironically one of the protagonists was Poland at the time.

The talk of Poland leaving the EU is no more than a ploy for Tusk to become PM there. Has the Polish Government said it? No.

European Union leaders made a fresh effort on Friday to overcome their differences on how to handle immigrants, but disagreed on the best way forward, with the head of the bloc’s executive saying there would be no EU funds for “barbed wire and walls.”

While total immigration numbers are low compared to the bloc’s population of some 450 million people, the issue feeds support for nationalist and populist groups across the EU, making it hard to reach a compromise among its 27 members.

“Recent months have shown that the pressure of migration is not letting up. It’s actually rising again,” said Austria’s new chancellor, Alexander Schallenberg.

A tightening of the bloc’s external borders was essential, he said, endorsing Lithuania’s call for EU financing for hard border infrastructure such as drones or fences.

There'll be no compromise that all 27 will agree on over this issue. This isn't about what the Commission says or wants. This is about what National leaders & their Parties will face from their own electorate.

LONDON, Nov 18 (Reuters) - European Union stock exchanges will be forced to hand over data on market transactions on a single "tape" for investors to spot the cheapest deals and help the bloc compete better with London and New York, a draft EU document shows.

The reform proposal is one of many due next week from the European Commission aimed at knitting together the EU's capital markets after Britain's departure last year and at widening the use globally of the euro in finance.

Brussels wants to build "strategic autonomy" in financial services to rebuild its economy after COVID-19, channel money into 'green' projects, and cut reliance on London, which still clears some 90% of euro-denominated swaps.

Poland testing the EU again......

Polish tribunal rules European rights court cannot question its judges

WARSAW (Reuters) - Poland's Constitutional Tribunal said on Wednesday that the European Court of Human Rights had no power to question its appointment of judges, rejecting a ruling by Europe's top human rights court in May.

Dismissed by critics as a politicised body, the Constitutional Tribunal has already sparked a crisis in the European Union this year by ruling that parts of the bloc's treaties are incompatible with the Polish constitution.

"Article 6 of the Convention ... as far as it includes the Constitutional Tribunal in its definition of a court, is not compatible," with the Polish constitution, said judge Julia Przylebska, the head of the Tribunal.

She said the article was unconstitutional in as far as it gave the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) the right to assess the legality of the appointment of the Tribunal's judges.

EU court told to dismiss Polish, Hungarian cash-for-democracy challenge

Extract:
BRUSSELS, Dec 2 (Reuters) - The European Union's top court should dismiss a challenge by Poland and Hungary to a new tool aimed at cutting cash for member states which break the bloc's democratic rules, an initial legal opinion said on Thursday.

While the advocate general's opinion is not binding, the Luxembourg-based European Court of Justice (ECJ) usually follows it when making a final ruling, which is expected early in 2022.

Contrary to arguments presented by Warsaw and Budapest, the opinion said the new policing mechanism does not overstep the competencies of the EU and its central institutions in Brussels as laid out in the bloc's treaties.

Polish and Hungarian officials criticised the opinion, with a deputy justice minister, Sebastian Kaleta, saying in Warsaw: "It was a naivety to trust EU institutions would be capable of self-restraint."

Its no coincidence that these Eurosceptic right wing Governments in both Poland an Hungry are losing popularity with their disdain for the rule of law .... with rallies in support of the EU ...

Poland's Ruling PiS party support drops to 30%

Support for the ruling Law and Justice dropped to 30%, according to several opinion polls published over the last few days. The support of the democratic opposition remains steady at over 40%, often close to 50%, while the far-right Confederacy is polling below 10%.

Hungary: anti-Orbán alliance leads ruling party in 2022 election poll

In Hungry six-party opposition alliance that aims to topple Hungary’s Viktor Orbán in elections next year has pulled four points clear of the authoritarian prime minister’s Fidesz party after electing a common leader, according to an opinion poll.

Record EU defence spending masks failure to collaborate

When buying equipment last year, EU governments mainly did deals on their own, falling well short of a commitment made in their 2017 pact to ensure that slightly more than a third of such procurement is done jointly with other Union members.

European Union states spent nearly 200 billion euros ($225 billion) on defence in 2020, the most since records began in 2006, but joint investment by governments fell, the European Defence Agency (EDA) said in a report on Monday.

The EDA, an EU agency that helps the bloc's governments to develop their military capabilities, said the total spending of EU countries except for Denmark - which opts out of EU military projects - reached $198 billion, a 5% increase on 2019.
