Swine Flu
i'm not especially worried about catching swine flu.
feel like the press are hyping up what is in essence a flu outbreak which is spreading because it is a new strain...
it is unusual for us because it is out of the usual flu season but ordinary seasonal flu is just as dangerous to vulnerable people like the elderly, children or people with low immune systems/disease...

if i catch it now i will feel like an eejit won't i :95im:

It is out there like any other flu virus except that they say it will be October before a vaccine is available and by that time it will obviously have spread further and infected more people.
Two choices - take your chance and go about your usual business including taking a flight, bus, taxi and walking down the street, or stay at home don't let anyone in or out, have shopping done on line and delivered about 20M from your door so that you don't get within sneezing distance of the delivery man.Spray everything touched by him with antibacterial spray, Don't work !!, don't socialise and by waiting until it has done it's rounds, you will be infection free, bored to tears and know how Terry Waite felt !

If we are going to catch it, I bet it will be due to one of those muppets who can't manage to cough or sneeze and use a handkerchief at the same time. Met plenty on the last flight back to the UK, which is probably the biggest breeding ground for bugs in the world.

When we flew back from Bodrum in May the staff were wearing masks over their nose/mouth area, but more often than not they'd pulled it down under their chin, so were open to us customers giving them our germs anyway. What was the point of that?!!!

It's amazing that a month ago Crashtester started this thread by asking if we were worried about catching this when travelling abroad.

UK has now the third highest number of confirmed cases behind Mexico and the US.

A person from Essex has just died in hospital from the virus - they're the 15th UK victim - the worrying thing about this one is that the victim had no underlying medical problems - all the other deaths had.

Swine Flu

Chief Medical Officer Sir Liam Donaldson warned on Saturday that other healthy people were at risk of dying from the disease.

He said: "As with all flu-like viruses, some people are at higher risk than others. Unfortunately, people who are otherwise healthy could also become seriously ill or, sadly, die."

But Sir Liam added: "Fortunately, this particular new virus isn't nearly as severe as it could have been.

Sir Liam has also said ""Ordinary flu occurs every year during the winter months in the UK. It affects 10-15% of the UK population, causing around 12,000 deaths every year."

I suppose when people are worrying about flu, it takes their mind off how the government is running the country....

Personally I don`t think anyone should be worried about catching swine flu any more than catching flu, they can all be killers if attacking an already weakened body. Sometimes in can affect a healthy person more than others hence you will always get an apparently healthy individual dying from it.

I get recalled every year for a flu jab because I am at risk (apparently) but feel fitter now than I have done for years.

12,000 people die every winter in the UK from flu anyway. Not sure I want a vaccination that is only having a 5 day trial before it is issued to the public.

I'm waiting for the first policeman to be diagnosed with swine flu

l am waiting for the first politician to be confirmed with this virus, because l think there is a conspiracy going on from the politician to keep the media away from their criminal activites.Once that happens, then they can freely misuse the taxpayers money again without any worries of getting caught red handed.

Funny how so many pigs have their snouts in the trough and find their immune to swine fever.l smell a rat

Of course you're worried Maggie. You wouldn't be human if you weren't but there's no need to panic. It's good that your grandaughters have been diagnosed and are getting the correct treatment. According to the TV reports, the otherwise healthy child who died from swine fever didn't get the correct medication until it was too late to save her.

I'm sure you'll be telling us in a day or two that they are up and about again.

I wouldn't worry about it It seems the ones to worry about at the moment are the ones with underlying health problems. The doctor who contracted it and died a couple of days ago lived three miles from me but it turns out he died of natural causes.

Ow my dear I know how you are worrying its easy to say dont but you still do,!!

I do hope your grandaughter will soon be well.!!

I think there are going to be a lot more families on TLF that have a relative go down with this dreadfull bug.

I get annoyed with the media
Our local newspaper called it the "Killer Disease!!!!"

Firstly it is NOT a disease, its a VIRUS

Secondly killer is not a correct description !!

Its by all accounts a MILD FLU VIRUS

It doesnt appear any more dangerous than normal FLU which nobody worries about each year yet that has killed over 10,000 people a year in the UK and does every year.
If nobody had mentioned Swine Flu,nobody would worry about ordinary flu at all which has been around since I was a kid at least.
Martyn is quite right!!

Its not even a dreadful bug really Maggie
Just a mild strain of a flu virus and some apparently dont even realise they have it,just feeling unwell and feverish.

Its like calling our normal annual flu ,the "Disease from Hell".
People have died from that for ages but, like a plane crash means thousands of other planes will crash from the media point of view, the reality is very different!!

I hope the kids are well again soon and wish them well

Sorry to hear that the littleones are ill, I am sure they will be up and running around again in no time. Can I ask were they tested and confirmed, as here in Scotland anyway they no longer seam to be doing that, its a case of calling NHS24 going through the symptoms and them deciding if you have it or not.
4 people from my work have been told they have it yet none have seen a doctor and were diagnosed over the phone. Just wodered if its the same all over the uk.

I think it's the same all over. You phone a number and someone on your behalf goes to the doctor and gets the prescription for the Tamiflu or whatever.
