fter Istanbul and Ankara, izmir is Turkey's third most populous city. After Athens it is the second biggest town in the Aegean Sea. The city, which remained in English until around 1930, is known in classic Antiquity as Smyrna. There are several metropolitan districts composed of the city, and the central district of Konak is historical of the capital. The city has over 3,000 years of history as a human location since the Neolithic period and up to 8,500 years of history. In 1971 the Mediterranean Games were held, and in 2005 the World University Games were held. The Climathon is set for 2019. As part of the metropolitan area of the city, the passage of Act 6360 created all 30 districts in 2013.
In terms of freight handled and the free zone is the pioneer among the 20 in Turkey, Izmir's port is the largest port for Turkish exports. The town hosted the 1971 Mediterranean Games and the 2015 World University Games.
