Being a smoker, I tend to suffer from regular bouts of bronchitus. As Im living here in Turkey and I know its bronchitus, I bypass the Doctor and get my medication from the chemist. A couple of years ago they gave me an antibiotic called 'Ketek'. Since then, every time I get bronchitus, I just buy that over the counter and it works extremely well. However, browsing the internet the other day I came across this:

Ketek linked to liver damage.

There are several sites like this that contain similar information on lawsuits etc.. Consequently, I wont be using it anymore!

So for any of you that suffer from bronchitus, sinusitus or the like in Turkey, just something to be aware of.

Hi Kym

If you apply the same logic to smoking, then your bronchitus will clear up without the need for any drugs, and you possibly wont suffer from all the other smoking related diseases

There are a lot drugs with possible side effects.A few years ago I was put on statins, not because I had heart problems but because of family history.Statins can also have side effects with liver problems as I dare many other drugs have. There are two sides who debate the pros and cons of statins
(1)The government and the chief medical officer who recommend those in the danger area are put on statins to reduce heart problems.
(2)Some specialists who say it is scaremongering and a box ticking excercise by the Government and not just our government and the only gainers will be the drug companies.
I believe Superbogs was involved in pharmacuticals and I would like to hear his views on this.

haha, I was expecting the ex smoker brigade!! Actually, I think I first suffered from Bronchitus around the age of 14, before the fags! Undoubtedly they dont help, but thats my choice isnt it ;-) I also suffer from Sinusitus which is another condition this drug is given out for. The point of my post is the option we have to self medicate here in Turkey and a lot of people do on word of mouth without realising or checking the contraindications.

Whats over the counter in one country and another are quite different, as you know you can help yourself directly with antibiotics in Turkey. I bought myself a batch of amoxicillin for a tooth absess last time I was over.

Not sure what class of antibiotics 'Ketek' is? I assume you are listing brand name.

A good warning for chronic bronchitis sufferers, hope it doesn't lead to any side effects for you.
With any drug there is always a risk and before prescribing one always evaluates to see if the benefits outweighs the risk as well as the age of the patient!

i read your post with interest, Diane, as i didn't think Septrin was still available.
i am severely allergic to Septrin, and always have to say when asked about any meds.

Your doctor won't prescribe you the only drug that has been tested for you that works because of the price....I must be missing something here?

Here in Fethiye (at least, I think it is the whole of Turkey) you cannot now just buy a lot of drugs, including anti biotics, over the counter any more, you need (what passes for) a prescrition from a doctor.

How long has this been the rule and where does one find a doctor to get a prescription for, say, antibiotics?

Yes Arrian some people can be allergic to it , if your taking a course of it you must stay out of the sun , in my case i got what looked like prickly heat , but i didn't make that mistake again , suppose its trial and error ,

Bob yes it was the price , GP said .." we don't use those anymore thier expensive we have more modern pills now " well on the third course of his modern pills i called my husband who sent me septrin from Turkey 4 days later i was nearly back to normal , In hospital my bed was raised at the head and feet lowerd because of the " poison " but my GP thought he knew better than 2 private specialists that i paid for !!! but the good news is ,,Don.t laugh .

My dogs Vet told me take odourless garlic pills every day and i do now rarely get the infection , so it proves garlic pills are good for you .....Diane

i have a ventolin inhaler prescribed by my doctor which i only use occassionally, i pay for my prescriptions here in the uk at a cost of over £7 each item. last year when i was in turkey with my daughter and her partner he wanted an inhaler which he bought in the local pharmacy, he only paid 7 lira. hence to say i will no longer be getting them on prescription here.

I asked the Pharmacist in the big Chemist shop in Oasis today if there was a new ruling about buying Antibiotics over the counter and he said no, you can still buy what you need.
