one way flight or not?

i,m sitting at with man flu so decided to cheer myself up by looking at booking my summer trip to turkey. normally I have kids in tow but this year its just me and the wife. so I fancy something different. I am looking at flying from London to somewhere like alanya or antayla to see another part of turkey. we plan to stay there for about 4-5 days and fly back to Izmir hire a car and end up back to our place in dikili. question is has anyone ( which I,m sure someone has) booked a one way flight and then booked a flight out there to come home when necessary. have noticed flights are very exspensive in july when we have to travel. also if anyone has suggestions what hotel or panysions are nice to stay. thanks for reading. dave

I personally would make sure you book your return flight now because even for a July flight the prices now are probably favourable. You could chance getting a cheap return nearer your leaving date but it's very likely that once you enter your date into your search you'll likely find you could be paying 5 times more. I would add that I'm saying this from many years of experience. So unless you have deep pockets book it now. And remember that you are tracked on all the times you look at prices so don't dither too long because it will get more expensive.

Something to bear in mind if you're using a UK travel insurance. Every insurance company that I've come across insists that you book both outbound and return flights BEFORE you depart the UK, otherwise insurance becomes invalid. There may be companies that differ from this but I don't know of any.

I'm almost certain that you can't fly direct to Izmir from Antalya, you'll have to go via Istanbul with either Turkish Airlines or Pegasus. If you decide to do this you should definitely book now as domestic flight prices rise heavily as you get nearer the main season.

Suggest you check for flights via skyscanner if you select London any to Antayla
depending when you are flying 1st 2 weeks in July you can find flights with a stopover in Istanbul from £82 or £109 direct the dates to avoid if you can are any date after 19th July school holiday period
When using skyscanner select whole month if you travel dates are flexible
Flights from Antayla to Izmir start from around £13

Flights back to London from Izmir start from around £40

When looking for flights always search both outbound and return as one way only as they are cheaper and you have more choice you will find some airlines the price increases if book a return flight as a single booking

And just to add to this point - remember to check your UK house buildings & contents insurance.... We found, when we wanted to do a long trip, that ours insisted that we could not be away from home for more than 30 days without both paying an additional premium and having a return ticket!

Firstly there are lots of internal flights between Antalya and IZMIR some direct, or we sometimes do this this by Pamukale Coaches. Yes it's a lot longer than flying but the buses leaves Antalya Otogar about 10am in the morning and goes over the mountains via Denizli, Aydin, and Kusadasi did cost 75ytl and will get you into to Kusadasi at tea time and food and drinks supplied on the bus, and its a really lovely trip. Also if you want to stay in Antalya would recommend Oscar Boutique hotel just outside the old town walls and a real hidden gem, and very central,

If you want to see different parts of the country you could get a Bus from Antalya to Denizli ( 3 hours) side trip from Denizli to pamukkale (30mins)

Return to Denizli catch a train to Izmir if you have time stop off at selcuk if your interested in Ephesus

The Denizli train takes you all the way into the Centre of Izmir even stops directly at Izmir Airport

LittleDave - I agree with everyone that you should book your flights etc before you fly to Turkey - that way you will have a more relaxing holiday and no hassle.

If you fly return from Gatwick to Antalya in July, then look at these options ... 1) Departing Thursday, 5th July and returning Thursday, 12th July direct both ways on Thomas Cook for £191 return ... OR ... 2) Departing on Tuesday, 10th July and returning Tuesday, 17th July direct both ways on Thomas Cook for £183 return ... OR ... 3) Departing on Friday, 13th July and returning on Friday, 20th July direct on Thomas Cook both ways for £246 return ... OR ... 4) Departing on Tuesday, 17th July and returning on Wednesday, 25th July - both ways on Thomas Cook direct - £274 return.

As you are flying into Antalya airport, you have probably thought about staying either in Antalya, Alanya or Side... Antalya is a busy city with a shingle beach and the last time I was there my feet bled; they do sell special shoes on the beach but I was foolish and thought I did not need them ... Alanya is a good 2-hour drive from Antalya airport and is very spread out so you would probably be needing a car there ... Side is a 50-minute drive from Antalya airport and has the 2nd longest sandy beach in all of Turkey as well as the longest promenade in the whole of the Mediterranean; it has the Apollo Temple where Anthony and Cleopatra fell in love, a pretty little harbour with lots of shops, bars and restaurants around, and a very good Saturday market as well. There is every type of hotel you would want to choose from too. I have been all over Turkey and Side is my favourite place.

Flying between Antalya and Izmir one way direct is only £14 to £19 on Sun Express and the flight takes 1 hour and 10 minutes.

Then Izmir to Gatwick one way direct ... 1) Departing on Thursday, 12th July direct on Thomas Cook is £50...or... 2) Departing on Thursday, 19th July direct on EasyJet is £68 ... or ... 3) Departing on 24th or 26th July direct on EasyJet for £85.

Check the reviews of some of the ticketing agents and you will find they operate a bait scheme list a low price once they got you details the price goes up
Wherever possible always book directly with the airline

Peagsus and Easyjets website are good to look for flights as they both offer a 15 day window so you can check flights over a 2 week range from you chosen dates

Also review the baggage options with different airlines in many cases the airline that offers the lowest price is not always the cheapest
Example most of the flights from London to Antalya for the month of July Thomas Cook has the lowest advertise price on Skyscanner but once you take in to account their carry on luggage is only 6kg they may not be the cheapest

SunExpress advertise price normally includes 20KG hold luggage with 8kg carry on allowance

Peagsus offer good luggage allowances and they advertise different prices from 8kg carry on luggage upwards

Easyjet carry on luggage is very good as there is no weight limit

it looks like all the airlines do this crazy baiting and pricing scheme. I spent a bit of time on BA site. one minute the flight costs £830. I click to proceed to payment, then all of a sudden I get booted back to the home page. I try again and now the same flight is £940. it was £1045 when I checked again around 2 hours later. they use some crazy software that basically generates random prices, with the hope of making as much money from the tickets as possible.

but I did notice sights like last minute.com tend to charge a bit more for same flights. something to do with commission I suppose.
