I was listening to BBC Radio yesterday. A UK politician was talking sense about these infringements of privacy and pointing out that no terrorist has ever been discovered as a result of enhanced airport security - so why keep ramping up the security?

I thought they had caught someone with fluid and that kicked off the 100ml limit? Might be wrong though.

They didn't catch them at an airport. It was just a plot that got busted.

An "expert" was opining recently that suicide bombers will move to having the bombs inside their bodies triggered by remote control. So I expect the next stage of security will be full body X-Ray before flight. Seeing someone naked on a scanner as described in this article will not be enough.

At some point someone has to stand up to this nonsense and say "Enough is enough".

Having worked for a spell in airport security, (part time, casual staff) I can only say after full training - anything which heightens the safety of air users is in my opinion - Welcome !!!!, it would make your hair curl if you knew the various ways / lengths any person wishing to compromise lives could go to!! To be honest I know it can be a pain in the butt but just remember any security measures is for your own safety !!! and that of your family. Airport staff are not exempt to the same rigorous measures the general public are subjected to.

What is the difference between a properly trained security officer looking at a scan of you and a doctor/nurse/radiographer etc at a hospital examining/carrying out tests on you? It's just part of their job. They're not interested in whether or not you've got boob implants or a big ***** If everyone had to do it, it would become the norm. It's not compulsory to fly. If you don't want to "endure" the security measures to safeguard your life then find another way to travel.

Why is it that when a plane gets hijacked/blown up, people say more should be done about security. But when something IS done, people say its too much/inconvenient etc.

Why is it that when a place crashes and it turns out to be a mechanical/technical failure, people say it was a failure of the engineers/pilot to check the plane properly. Yet when a flight is delayed, people kick off that they will be late getting to their destination. Better late than never.

OK this is a couple of sweeping statements. But you get the gist.

How far do you go then? There has to be a compromise unless every person is taken into a cubical and given the full works? :D

With the nut cases in the world today and the extremes they will go to, to kill innocent people I could care less if they had me on the jumbo monitor going through this machine. I wasn't shy with others seeing my private parts when I was younger so why would I care now. I just want to make the trip in one piece safe and sound. Mind you if the pat down atendant is a nice looking lady I may opt for both...:roundgrin

If this is so important, why are we not having the same measures on High Speed Trains; they carry just as many passengers as a plane.

Martyn, if your comment was a response to my comment then I think all I can say is I leave the security judgements to the professionals. But I am with you on the scanner being used in private. Then *curls lip* there's always the pervs wanting the scanner job....

On a lighter note, the cubicle for a "full works" sounds an interesting way to break up the journey ;)

Good point Immac, I recently made an 8 hour journey by boat and return and no security check whatsoever. Perhaps it was unknown to us, car through some sort of screen but it was not apparent. We also slept on the boat on both journeys and to be honest I thought Jeez if something happens on here, bit far from land for comfort.

It couldn't do the damage of 9/11 I wouldn't have thought although a bomb at Euston or Kings Cross terminus would be devastating.

Maybe they'll use it for the extra ciggies? :D

Things would be a lot safer if the current security procedures were carried out properly and consistently. We have had many experiences where people were allowed to take water bottles through, more than one or larger than allowed hand luggage etc. It would also help if the passengers read the information provided and heeded it. It really gets up my nose when the security queue is held up by people with bags full of things that aren't allowed. Grrrr!
