Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe returns to Iranian prison
I hope the UK's answer to Trump ...Boris reflects on the results of his folly "speaking before thinking" in his part in the extension of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe sentence ....... As she again is returned back into an Iranian prison after a short break with her child ... her husband was refused an Iranian visa so was unable to see her .

Doubt that it has caused Doris to lose any sleep. A man with a concience would however feel dreadful. Didn't think she would get more than the 3 days free, it's a form of cruelty and done to put pressure on the Uk government.

The UK still owe Iran 450 million from years back. I don't think Nazarin will be free till they get their money. We never seem to hear much about the owed money but owed it is and Nazarin is a political pawn. Sadly for her and her family bumbling Boris didn't come up trumps for her. Very sad wicked state of affairs.

Isn't the UK along with the EU still backing the nuclear deal with Iran?

I dont know about anyone else but this current 'political' fad of using innocent citizens of all countries as pawns for their own power play sickens me. There is nothing intelligent or clever about playing with peoples' lives like a cat playing with a wounded bird.
We should be demanding that the UN creates a rule that this cannot continue. Even if ignored, the perpetrators should be blacklisted and could eventually be brought to court.

I agree Kanga, but do you think demanding the UN to create a rule that this can't continue, would work?

As the UN has been pretty toothless and impotent in the case of Israel breaking the UN rules ... and the UN security council veto has stopped any reprimand on the likes of Syria's misdeeds ...

I agree Camden, the current UN is pretty useless but a future one may be more robust. It takes a long time to bring some of these snivelling little cowardly bullies to justice, but they do sometimes end up in the Hague. Only this week there are calls for Burmese generals to be indicted on genocide charges, more than a year after the world first got news of their actions. If the crime doesn't even exist on the UN Charter, there can be no charges.Recording this behaviour as unacceptable and a crime is a start, if nothing else.

It seems holding our passport ( not even a Shiny Blue one ) doesn't give us a " Legal right to consular assistance or protection" if wrongly imprisoned (or held Hostage by a foreign power for an unpaid Government debt ) and no fault of your own.

That is what was said in a Letter from the Foreign Office to the husband of the imprisoned Nazanin Zaghari -Ratcliffe , when he complained that nothing seemed to be being done, after all this time, to secure his wife's release .... He also asked what was the Plan, if in nine-weeks' time when her 5-year sentence is up, if the threatened further charges are brought against her, what is the Plan ? ....Only to get a letter to say there is "No Legal right to consular assistance or protection" if arrested through no fault of your own..... Boris as FO at the time, has and added debt to the family ( as he made it worse giving the Iranians supposed justification in charges ) . As F.O. he had to answer to the PM before making decisions, but now he is the PM and the ball is in his court....

I really feel for Nazanin, she is in a circle of hell through no fault of her own, as is her family.

There are 2 problems with expecting consular assistance when abroad.

First: if there is no existing diplomatic agreement between countries to allow consular access to detained foreigners, the FO cannot get to see them. This is the problem with Iran at the moment. UK has no agreement so Iran can legally refuse our request for access. Cruel, yes, despicable, certainly, but within 'the rules'.

Second: if someone holds dual nationality, they will automatically fall under the law of the current country of nationality if involved in a legal/criminal episode; eg: a dual UK/German national would be held under German law if arrested in Germany and the UK would not be able to assist or insist on UK citizenship taking priority. Likewise if arrested in UK the German consulate could not influence any outcome and UK law would take priority .

Some countries do not allow dual nationality; I believe Austria is one.

Zahra Ismaili was convicted of killing her husband, Ali Rıza Zamani, her defence was she was mistreated by him and and committed murder to protect herself and her daughter. She was found guilty in the court an sentenced to hang for his murder ....

On the day of her sentence there was 18 men ahead of her to be hanged ... watching the hangings she became distressed and suffered a heart attack and died .... but the law in Iran is the sentence must still go ahead to give the her husband's family, in this case her mother in law the right to kick away the chair ... So her body was hung.....

. . . and they resent the criticism of their religion by the non-Muslim and/or western world, and demand respect.

The high ground unfortunately is not ours, we encourage and supply regimes who do the same in the region, eg SA. The excuse may be religion or tribal culture etc, but it is, was it is , a repressive regime. Seen throughout 20th century from Asia , eg Cambodia to eg South America , Chile , Africa, Central African Republic Bokassa ( both, of which we the West supported )
