Istanbul by Coach/Bus from Dalaman

Hi all

Have searched the forums without success so hopefully somebody can help?

My teenage son and his girlfriend have expressed a desire to visit Istanbul from Dalaman this August and plan on going by the cheapest means ie bus or coach. Is there a daily service to Istanbul from Dalaman and does anybody know what standard the vehicles are ie loo's on board, aircon etc?

It's probably just as cheap to fly using one of the low-cost Turkish Airlines. Pegasus flies into Istanbul daily.

Buses all very good.
Varan is a little more luxurious and just a bit more expensive.
KamilKoc give a free film and free refreshments.
Ulusoy Ankara to Istanbul is about 50YTL. Also, free wireless Internet.

Val above is probably right, it'll be just as cheap to use the airlines.

Some of our family used the bus a couple of weeks ago, as they didn't book early enough to get a reasonable price airline ticket. I can't remember the exact times, but they left Istanbul late evening and got to Dalaman about noon. Not too nackered, still fit enough for lunch at Toprakana and a relaxation at the pool later on. Early to bed, mind!

The buses are fine, but it's a lo-o-o-ng journey. There's no direct connection to Dalaman. You have to take the Dalaman - Fethiye bus first, then get the Fethiye - Istanbul connection. And the same on the way back of course.

We were going to travel to Istanbul by coach so we made a lot of enquires at Dalaman.

Coaches leave late afternoon/early evening to get into Istanbul early morning. We were quoted approx 135TL return.

We also looked at airlines-it was much more expensive.

The coaches look quite comfortable and modern.

The average coach price from Dalaman to Istanbul is 50TL single on very good coaches like Kamil Koc etc. Airline tickets can be bought for around 69TL but by the time taxes are added on its nearer 100TL. The problem, like all cheap flights, is actually getting them. Usually you have to book months in advance for the cheapest tickets, otherwise, especially with THY, the single tickets are around 200TL (400TL return) as opposed to 100TL return on the coaches. Its obviously a matter of judging cost against journey time/convenience etc.

All long distance coaches have aircon and a few have toilets. They tend to stop every 2 - 3 hours or so for a 20 minute "comfort break" at services areas which are very much like UK ones, but nowhere near as expensive.

The journey by coach to Istanbul can take up to 15 hours, and if you find charter flight seats uncomfortable, you'll not enjoy going by coach. The seats themselves are very comfortable but, in general, legroom is a big problem, especially if you're a bit taller than the average Turk.
