Illegal 2TL Beer!
Bars and restaurants in Dalyan selling large Efes as low as 2TL may be breaking the law according to a local Trades Association.

According to the Dalyan Times the Chief Officer of the Ortaca Trades and Crafts Association Husamettin Karasahin is asking for talks with legal experts as he says the pricecutting is illegal as 2TL beer is being sold at a loss.

He says "rich shop owners" will put smaller ones out of business and says those offering discounted prices will need a special licence from the local authority or they will be committing an offence under Order No 4077 which can lead to large fines.

The official price list for drinks would be 5TL for a large beer, imported beers 6TL, a glass of wine 7TL and imported spirits 12TL.

He says the harmonisation of prices will ensure all businesses get their fair share of trade.

So everyone else is breaking it by charging too much for coffee and tea and other soft drinks??? The point is, if the taxes on alcahol were lower, then the prices would not need to be so high, do not blame the retailer for trying to attract custom but the government for the prohibitive tax system, which does not make sence in any ones oppinion!

efes costs 1.75 from wholesalers so 2 ytl is still profit...perhaps the zabita/belediye should crack down on landlords charging stupid rents!

I agree that the real issue here is the extortionate rents charged by greedy landlords in Dalyan- far more than those which are charged in Fethiye for example. I, as a resident, do not expect to be charged more than 4TL for a large beer (it's usually Efes anyway which I find to be sickly gassy rubbish) and a bar which was charging 5TL was boycotted by a group of 6 of us.

Usual short term greed on a failing tourist market.
Kyrenia in North Cyprus charging 6 & 7tl for an Efes, but further down the harbour on the corner a lovely spot and they were charging 4tl. Casinos , much cheaper imported wine, very cheap petrol and Iceland outlets with all the pork, bacon and cheddar cheese you could want.......and this is the Turkish side, so how come they are so different?

I feel for the bar owners...however we have stopped going to some bars in bodrum that wanted 8 TL for a large Efes, that's as expensive as home and not as nice tasting!

Just come back from Girne - and yes in one place we paid 7tl for a large beer, then needed another for the shock!! We did see cheaper beers and the food varies but is generally a lot more to eat out than in Dalyan or around. The first night we went to a very nice restaurant in a lovely location and it cost 153tl for just main courses and drinks for 4 people. Normally we would never pay that much as the budget doesn't allow, but we were on holiday!!! I would like to add that we will never go to Kibris again in the high season as it is so much hotter there than Turkey.

i agree that 5ytl is too much for a bottle of efes, and most of the prices quoted for the alcohol were too high. but how can you claim that because beer can be bought wholesale for 1.75ytl then by a business selling at 2ytl is making a profit. a business cannot gain profit by only taking 25kurus per bottle. in case you dont realise there is electric to be paid, water bills, rent, licenses to be obtained, breakages to cover, wages to pay out plus accountant salary and tax etc. please stop expecting places to sell at the same price as they buy in. if you want 2ytl beer then buy it in the supermarket and enjoy it at your own home.

Good point Hope. Infact, the cheapest price for Efes in Dalyan supermarkets is 2.1TL although it is possible to buy it wholesale by the crate at 1.75TL. However, the reason that the Trades Association say it is being sold at a loss at 2TL is that the bars apparently pay an extra tax when they sell it to the customer making the actual cost above 2TL. Obviously its like a loss-leader to get you into the place. You tend to find that the places selling cheap beer are more expensive on food as they have to get their money somewhere!

The thinking is probably sell cheap you make more so the government wants some of that by letting you buy a licence. then its not illegal. LOL

I went to a bar in Dalyan with some visitors one late one night, they must have thought we were drunk. We ordered six beers, one each then decided to move on, we were asked for 40 lira when we said no, she said 30 lira then, so we also said no, then she asked how much would we pay and we said 25 lira and we won't be coming back.
