Here's one to figure out
Three guys want to buy a second hand tv. They each put £10 in a kitty (=£30) and give it to a fourth guy. He goes to the shop and finds out the tv has been reduced to £25, so he buys it and gives the three guys £1 each back telling them it was reduced, and keeps the remaining £2 out of the fiver over. So, the three guys have only paid £9 each, the forth guy has £2.... NOW, 3 x £9 = £27. Forth guy has only £2, (= £29 total) where's the other pound?

Ted, the guy is not a friend to be trusted with your dosh. He paid £25 for TV,and feeling half guilty,he gave them each a £1 back= £28,and pocketed £2 himself=£30.

My advice don't ask him to go the bar for you when its your round lol

Here's one to figure out
all 3 actually paid £8.3333333 each but he told them it was £9.00 each and kept 0.666666666 pence x3

£25 / 3 = £8.33333333
£27 / 3 = £9.00

Here's one to figure out
A farmer leaves an estate of 17 cows and his will says to split his estate between his 3 sons.

The eldest is to get 1/2, the middle son 1/3rd and the youngest son 1/9th - but no cow has to be 'cut up'.

They ask a neighbour to help and he suggests that he lend them a cow.
The eldest then takes 1/2 of 18 = 9, the middle son takes 1/3rd = 6 and the youngest takes 1/9th = 2.

9+6+2 =17 - the neighbour takes his cow back and everyone is happy

- but who has been unfairly treated???

. Sorry crystalclear, (and everyone else) there is simply no answer . It's just one of those quirky things with numbers that doesn't add up , but they all paid exactly £10 and then got exactly £1 back = £9 each has paid . Ted

10+10+10 = 30-3(= 9 x 3 =27) -2 for the soon to be not friend = £25 it adds up? why are you looking for another pound?

No its rounding up . £25 divided by 3 = £8.33 .Which means that they had overpaid by £0.67 each x 3 = £2:slapme:

9+6+2 =17 - the neighbour takes his cow back and everyone is happy

The original will is wrong as 1/2 + 1/3 + 1/9 do not add up to 1:3:

As I said they all paid £10 originally had £1 each returned so thought they paid only £9 each when in fact they actually paid £8.333333 each and the guy pocketed 0.666666 pence from each of them hence they thought it was £27 when it was only £25 = no pound missing and his £2 accounted for. numbers / problem whatever you wish to call it solved lol .

Debbie, 10+10+10=30. -3 (=27) 4th guy has only 2 . 27+2 =29.

Ted j you are making the mistake of adding the 2 to the 27 when it should be subtracted, remember he only paid 25 for the tv!
10+10+10=30.-3(=27)4th guy has only 2. 27-2=25

Put more simply they gave him 30 he paid 25 for the tv which left 5 he gave each of them 1 back which left 2 for him!

Don't think it matters how we explain John, suffice to say we'll not send Ted shopping.:45:

When you agree a cheque reconciliation you make clear the total to which to agree. You are trying to agree to 30 when infact you should amend the total to 27 as you already confirm that's what the three men actually handed over. Their mate got £2 profit within their expenditure.
