Health Food Shop (Fethiye Area)?
Is there a health food shop in or around Fethiye? Google just throws back shops that say they sell healthy food. Chemists seem to sell a small range of tablets or drinks, but a bit hit and miss, with generally small stock/choice.

I can buy on-line, but I would like to browse.

In particular, I am looking for sugar free cherry juice at the moment without success. Also range of vitamins (and the like) in one place.

So looking for specialist shop.

I have never seen one in Turkey at all. I have to say that when we lived in Istanbul I refused to go into the big malls. Have you searched online?

Some of the MM graded Migros stores have a range of 'health/gluten/vegan' options.

Incidentally, what are people (you) using to wash fruit and veg before eating? I have settled on bicarb soda solution. That seems to be the best to clean off pesticides, bacteria etc. Please don't say nothing!

On-line is possible, and I have seen the Migros selection, thank you both for the ideas, but I was hoping for a shop.

We just use tap water, but for much of the year we are using home grown stuff. We only buy a small amount of veg from the market in winter. If you buy from villagers in the market there will be less chance of intensive spraying.

You will be the first to know when you wake up one morning with two heads! Then you will be laughing on the other side of your second face.

Seriously, you can not tell what you have inside until you test for it. I would not trust farmers to do the right thing where profits are the driving force. Not much sign of "organic" growing, but when you ask they will all swear their produce is organic and safe. Build up of contaminants in the body can lead to health issues. In the UK, a friend of the family, a farmer, caught debilitating sickness from dipping his sheep - he said he followed all the rules, but he has life changing symptoms.

We grow organically and we are certified and checked annually. The leaves are picked at random and sent to Germany for analysis. Last year our Turkish neighbour sprayed his crops a total of 20 times over the year. he had a few less worms that us in his apples, but the crop did not look much better. We cut out the worms and pressed the good bits anyway. I do think you can get obsessive about washing in this and that though. Afiyet olsun

Would you have eaten your neighbours crops? And why is organic important enough for you to go to all that trouble?

I think that a simple wash, in something that will remove your neighbours spraying residue is a small effort to give some reassurance. I have had an analysis of toxins in me, and some, such as arsenic levels, are probably something from childhood. Can't do much about that, but I can stop adding to it.

I don't mind paying for organic if I can be sure that is what I am getting. Is there a Turkish organisation that promotes organic produce?

We do eat them, quite often we swap produce. We are organic because we started that way commercially. At one time we had 1000 dwarf apple trees, but we and they are aging now so have replaced most of them with lavender bushes, less money but stunning and almost no work.
There is a label affixed to certified organic produce. I will have a look for it and post it if I can.Last week we cooked some of his barbunya (pinto) beans, but used our own bay leaves, garlic, onions and tomatoes.

If this logo is afixed to the food in Turkey it has been certified as organic.
Ecocert.jpg

All fertilizer sold as organic must also have the same logo

Thank you. But I can not recall ever seeing this logo. I wonder how they promote this produce? I Googled it but there do not seem to be many producers signed up, and no indication where you can buy the stuff. I think that consumers just assume that if they buy from market traders it must be healthy and free of pesticides.

There are special markets for organic produce in Istanbul and Ankara every weekend, I realise that this is no good for people on the south coast. Migros stores are beginning to sell more organic produce. There is a separate category called 'doğal' (natural. There is no requirement for independent certification for this. At the moment we are certified but this year will be our last, we have not sold any produce on the market for a year or so now.
There is a wonderful pansiyon on the beach at Çıralı, Antalya 'Mediterranean Gardens' ( akdeniz bahçesi) the owner. Ekrem, grows organic produce and sells it in Istanbul. Ç?ral? Akdeniz Bahçesi - Ç?ral? Otelleri | Ekoturizm - Organik Tar?m

I have sent for some bottles of their Cherry Juice, so perhaps it will be what I want.
