Food prices at Bodrum Milas Airport
We have discussed the sky high prices at Bodrum airport here before, I don't buy anything there because of ripp-off prices, but on my last flight out I though I'll do a quick check to see if anything had changed since I got caught out the 1st time.

Anyway I had thought that you couldn't take water with you like the UK airports so didn't bring any liquids but did bring packed lunch, but after checking realised that my wife needed to take medication so needed to buy a bottle of water.

While we were queueing for passport control I saw the little shop in the left had a sign 'water & drinks 50% less then inside' so I though that sounds good so went over and bought a small bottle of water - price 3 Lira (usually shop price about half a lira) I pointed to the 50% sign and he said they charge 3 Euro inside so it is 50% off, yeah sure I though, I'll check it later and see.

After passport control I went to the cafe inside and did a quick check and here are the prices, the exchange rate they were using to convert to Lira was 2 to 1;

Small bottle of water 3 Euro
Can of drink (Coke, Fanta etc.) 5 Euro
Can of Efes 7 Euro

Special offer;
Slice of Pizza
Chips
Drink

10 Euro instead of 15 Euro

I was so p*ssed off that I filled in a suggestion/complaint form (box next to the stairs going to shop/cafe) and told them what I thought of the prices, maybe more people need to fill these forms in?

I did notice that majority of people had bought food and drink with them, so food shops are not being able to ripp off many people now.

Its so annoying the most expensive meal out of a two week holiday was burger and chips x 4 in Burger King Antalya Airport.

Did I read somewhere on another thread that they were stopping people taking food into the airport (not sure which one).

When we were coming back home at Bodrum airport my son had a 1ltr of coke for the journey i said to him at the airport you will have to throw it away. we went through sercurity they said he could take it through so he did and we still had it in his bag when we got off in Manchester.Its begs belief.

Just went through the airport on Friday and bought a can of Effes and a coke 25YTL, i knew it was pricey and sat down to watch the reaction of fellow travellers, boy did the staff take some stick! They purposely price in Euros so we all think it sounds cheaper, if it had been priced in YTL, most would run a mile. Its a rip off and very short sighted, price fairly and they would get alot more business.

I cannot understand why people keep buying there. I see people going up to the cafe ,having food then moaning about the Prices. Surely a human being can go a few hours without food and even water. We drink and eat before going in. Never ever buy anything in there. Ask for water on the plane or wait until we get to Manchester To eat and drink.
If people keep buying,they will keep selling. The comments will be like water off a Ducks back. Pete

We have always taken our own food and drinks when travelling out of the airport. So far we have never had to leave anything behind, but if that were to be the case, I would be drinking up from the outside rather than ditch anything and I can't see as anyone will be confiscating our butties.
I am always amazed at the number of people who still use the cafe and bar given the ridiculous rip off prices, but there is one thing I do know with certainty.
If everyone boycotted the bar and cafe (hypothetical only - I know) prices would fall. So I suppose the moral to this one is - 'Don't pay up and then start moaning'

Couldn't agree more Pete&Mag/Mushroom.

I think the place is a disgrace and a poor advert for Turkish hospitality. I travel extensively throughout the world and cannot think of a more expensive departure lounge bar/cafe. I have noticed more and more people getting wise to it though and bringing their own sandwiches/drinks so I guess the next logical step will be to ban that.

As I have said so many times before,check in and then come back outside and use the snack bar at the end of the buildings,it's cheaper and much better than being herded like cattle in the departure lounge.

That is British logic, and probably worldwide logic, but it is not Turkish logic. When the season is going badly and their takings are down, the prices go UP, not down. Seemingly, their thinking is that if they charge more, they will make more.

The only other organisations I know that do that are the British railway companies.

We always check in our luggage and never go through passport control. Instead we go back outside and if we want a coffee or water we use the cafe outside, its the same company 'Cafe Sera', its priced in Lira and is a fraction of the cost. You can watch the screens and sit in comfort until just before your flight is called. And for those of us that still have the filthy habit we can still smoke! Good times.

We only got caught once and that was our first trip to Turkey. You may wonder why people continue to buy, but not everyone has been to Turkey before and they may not know about this rip-off end to their holiday.

I have used that cafe before, but was told that they have now increased their prices, Turkish tea used to be 1 lira and is now 4 lira, not sure how accurate that is as I didn't use it myself this time, maybe someone can confirm?

I recently used the cafe outside Dalaman airport, in the winter a coffee was 4 lira, a big mug, last week I got a small paper cup of black coffee 8.5 lira I told them in no uncertain terms that I would not use it again. A few years ago I used to run the restaurant of a Hotel that specialised in Transfer tours and had to give a little speach about what was the itinary for the evening and reminded them to stock up on drinks and snacks from the little market next door, most took my advice and when I saw them again they thanked me. That was nice.

You will always get the few that will fuel the demand in these airports.No matter what they sell it at,the one’s that come to the airport plastered will no doubt want to buy some more booze and crisps,even though they have been several times and know of the prices.But the booze blocks what they knew and spend that more before they board.

Why doesn’t the travel agents tell the customers of these overpriced cafes’s and how to avoid them.The tourists buses maybe can provide a service of drinks and food specially ordered from each customer for the arrival and departure.This will get those greedy businesses something to think about

Here are some reviews on the site I posted the other day (on Airline Quality, Reviews etc). There's a section on Airports. I'm going to add mine 10 kurus worth....maybe the airport authorities will read and do something about these rip-off merchants. If anything, at least people are being warned through reading reviews.

Mmmm. Thanks. I see that one of the reviews on there is from me and I gave it 1 star out of 5! Forgive me, I formally apologise to the Forum and withdraw that 1 star forthwith!

To be fair I think I gave a 1 star on the basis that they allowed you to take your own food and drink through but if they are stopping that then it certainly has no saving graces! Its a shame because they are hardly doing their best to promote the best of Turkish and it must put a bit of a dampener on some holidaymakers if that is your parting image of Bodrum.
