Flashing yellow traffic lights!! Help :)
Hi all :)

Just a quick query which I hope someone can help me with.....Turkish traffic lights, what does it mean when there are flashing yellow lights?

My sister Pauline aka irishmatelot is out in Bodrum right now and is getting very perplexed with these flashing lights!!! So can anybody put her out of her misery?

Thanks in advance.

I think it means you may proceed with caution if the way is clear.
Hopefully someone will confirm.
I only use the green or red I don`t trust the amber.

i think it means u can go thru them, but u have to be careful - its like the lights aren't needed because not much traffic, u just have to look out for other cars!

Both flashing yellow and flashing red mean proceed with caution.

In many parts of Turkey the traffic lights change to flashing at around 10pm until around 7am.

Lynda,

As others have said, flashing amber means go if safe to do so.

Sometimes, especially at night, there will be flashing red lights. They, too, mean go if the way is clear.

I have noticed at some intersections (no doubt others will correct me if I'm wrong) that at night the lights on the main road flash amber while at the same time the lights on the minor road flash red.

What then does DUR mean? Thought it meant give way, but when coming from big Migros in Yalikavak today, heading towards town, they dont like it when you do hesitate to give way.

I thought it meant Stop, Tom, if for e.g the road merges into one and there is a DUR sign on their side, they should stop and you've got right of way. However, as experience has shown, always be very very cautious as they tend to drive on at you whatever the sign says, lol.

It means you can go but proceed carefully. The Red ones are the same. You can go if the way is clear. CRAZY!!!

You have to be a bit careful on roundabouts too.

Unlike in the UK where you give way to traffic already on the roundabout, in Turkey, it depends on the class of road from which you're emerging. You often find that there are DUR/Stop signs on a roundabout so that traffic already on it has to give way to traffic entering the roundabout from a higher classification of road from the right.

I have been driving here for 15yrs and I still cant work out who has right of way!

That'll generally be whoever's got the scariest stare !

They mean close your eyes and put your foot down, that's what I do everytime.

Its so confusing you think you have sussed it and stop at a red light then a car goes sailing past at high speed and you doubt yourself all over again.

In Turkey the red and amber lights are just pretty colours, when they flash it's just to look more attractive.

the amber light lights before the green are a warning that green is about to light and you can go with caution..., before the red, that you need to stop. people willy nilly jut go thru, be careful, drive defensively. the flahing yellow light goes on automatically in bodrum at 11:00 pm. and you can go thru them cautiously. DUR means stop. always drive carefully and expect the idiot driving next to you is out to get you. so defensive driving is the best policy. drive carefully.................

I thought it was time to tell my story of driving in turkey. Actually it was my daughter and me as navigator. One rainy night we all decided to go into Altinkum to eat at Valentines. We navigated the bumpy road from Akbuk and approached the roundabout at the top of the hill to turn left to go down. The first set of lights were red so of course we stopped , no one else did, on to the roundabout flashing yellow proceed with caution round to next set. Stop on red, we are in the outside lane, whoops wrong. Police is on inside lane looking over at us, we smile. I told daughter to get into the inside lane when lights turn green. She does this but instead of getting behind the police car she speeds off to get in front. She then exclaims his lights are flashing hes pulling me over. We stop at the dolmus stop police car behind. we wait , they don;t get out. we wait, do we get out....at last they pull along side, im franticly looking in the dash for the car docs. Policeman asks daughter if she is alright. Big smile "yes thankyou". Are you lost he asks, "we are going to Valentines for dinner" she replies. Good the policeman said follow me. On we went all the way down the hill and around the bottom to Valentines following the police car with the flashing lights. It created quite a stir when we got to the restuarant having had a police escort.

What we learnt that night was the Police in Turkey have there flashing lights on so to be seen, not to pull you for a traffic offence, lol

At least the people in the restuarant thought we were important he he.

happy days

So how do you know if they are pulling you over.

Confused again lol

Jane

they overtake you screech to a holt and jump out with guns at the ready. LOL.

Now being serious I have learnt that when a car flashes his lights at you it means that he is coming through, unlike the giving way to you as practiced in the UK.
