Re: Dogs kill child

the police were informed in february that there were dogs being bred in that house by a housing officer, the police person who took the call said it isnt a police matter

The Chief Super today said that an error was made and the premises should have been visited by an expert police dog person
(there was and is a campaign to get dangerous dogs off the streets of merseyside, people are using them as weapons) so far over 300 illegal or dangerous dogs have been destroyed

Re: Dogs kill child

Personally i find these type of dogs very dangerous, and should not be allowed as family pets FULL STOP
How many innocent children must die before this breed of dog(PITBULL) is outlawed?

It's just not pitbulls, dogs generally shouldn't be left with children for a moment. It only takes a minute for something to happen. It recently happened with my two grandchildren and my sons pet dog. It's not a fighting dog but it just suddenly flipped and attacked the two of them. My dog grew up with children and would just go and hide if any children started to pull him about. They are not all like that as we know.

This is just too horrific for this to have happened to that four year old child. From reading about it and the news report, this is yet another tradegy that could have been prevented, but.......................................................

When I heard the news today, I felt sick to the stomach, appalling.

Re: Dogs kill child

dogs are a very emotive subject, but these dogs are fighting dogs and usually trained to attack on command, i would doubt if they could ever become pets as we know them

matty, the scum as you call them already shoot each other wouldnt it be great if every bullet hit a villain

What a horrendous thing to happen, what a lovely wee boy with his whole life in front of him. I bet all was on his mind was Santa coming and was getting all excited. It breaks my heart to see his little face. So so sad.

I've seen pitbull's in the USA wiyh kids and can be great pets if you keep to the rules ...Not with realy young children .. Not teased ,, Not pulled about . Its a dog not a toy . and it locks its jaws . I don't understand why with all the publicity about this breed people with kids under ..say 10 , would want one for a family pet . In one state of USA they are banned . so its down to the person who buys the dog . They have to live with the consquences of thier actions and the death of a child .. But it will happen again because people never learn and soon forget the news , plus thier dear fido ..is different .. These dogs can bring down a lion . i wish people would learn but they never do ..... Diane

Re: Dogs kill child

it hasn't yet been said what breed of dog was involved, but ANY dog should be considered dangerous, especially where young children are concerned.

we have had several different breeds of dog over a 35 year period, and toddlers don,t understand that a dog doesn't like to poked or have it's tail or ears pulled, or even just fussed over too much, and the only way that a dog can let you know is to maybe snap out, so we kept our dogs away when we had visitors, but it's the owners that need educating, as too many think their dog won't do anything, but it could so easily turn in the wrong situation.

it's a terrible tragedy, and the sad thing is, there will probably be more cases before something is done. i also believe ALL dogs should be muzzled when outside, whatever the breed, as well as being on a lead.

totally agree arrian, but the fact the police are having a post mortem on the dog to establish its breed would suggest it is probably in the family of dogs that are considered dangerous, ie it probaly looks similar to a banned breed.

Re: Dogs kill child

according to what i read this dog has been used to threaten people in the neighbourhood and complaints have been made it sowner a 21 year old has probably trained it to be vicious. ─░ts a dreadful thing to happen.

As a complete barsteward i would like to see the owners of dogs that are clearly used in a threatening or intimidating manner, to be placed on a choke chain or leash and led around the streets, on all fours, nose in the gutter, where they belong.

Prejudiced, oh yeah.

Firstly i'm a dog lover, secondly a parent.Child versus pit pull,i wont answer.Fact,This type of dog has killed many children before, how many more need to die before something is done.I dont care if others say their a lovely family pet, fact is they have killed again. How many yorkshire terriers have killed small children,or labradors. It sickens me to hear people stick up for them, would they feel the same if their child /grandchild was mauled to death in front of the them in the kitchen???

Pitbulls are on the banned breed list here in the UK but it's defined as 'pitbull type'. No post mortum is going to establish the exact breed so I am unsure why they are doing this. If a dog is reported as being on the dangerous breed list then it is usually up to the court to decide whether the dog is or isn't the actual type.
I personally believe in punish the deed not the breed but I do agree that if a dog has attacked or worse killed a child there is nothing else to do but destroy the dog. It's always going to be a risk so cannot be left to possibly do this again. Pitbulls can be lovely pets and it really is down to the way they are raised from puppyhood. However, the danger is down to the fact that a pitbull can inflict more serious wounds than say an average pet mongrel simply due to its sheer strength.
We need to address the problem of irresponsible ownership of dogs here in the UK. The government needs to reintroduce a licensing scheme which incorporates training, neutering, microchipping etc. If this isn't addressed soon then scroates will continue to use these poor dogs as a weapon to intimidate people and more poor children will become victims.
I own 4 dogs and they are all well socialised pets with respect for my 2 sons (who are 7 yrs and 9wks old), however - I would NEVER EVER leave them unsupervised with the dogs. My 7 yr old son has taken part in dog training and he is also taught respect for the dogs, they have their own den's to go to and he knows to leave them alone if they go in there.
Simple common sense should apply to dog ownership, unfortunately the scum that own these dogs have one brain cell less than an amoeba.

Yes good point Claire any dog can turn in a second even 'good' breeds and with 'good' owners.

Absolutely, and if you research dog bite statistics and surveys on 'best family dogs' people would be quite surprised at some of the dogs on there.
For example spaniels (which I have and are lovely with my kids) feature high on the list of biters and staffies (portrayed by media as devil dogs) feature high on the list of best family dog.
Like I said, its deed not breed but unfortunately the scroates are attracted to macho breeds which are by nature stronger and therefore more dangerous if not trained or controlled correctly.
