Poor poor child. I know this is a long time cultural thing, but Turkey really must strive to change this mindset and practice - it's inhuman....

'A 13-year-old girl forced into marriage two times by her family in the province of Çorum will be put under the government’s protection.'

As I said above, totally primitiveness. But, lets also have a look at the world. Millions of childs and teenage girls have been kidnapped and used in p*rno industry forcefully or willingfully by "come come to money" slogans. World isnt much different.

In the UK, and in Sweden for that matter, they are being forced by peer pressure to have sex long before they are mature enough. Studies show that girls involved in the Porn trade frequently have a history of Child abuse (sexual) and the father's are over-represented as perpetrators. We all need to learn to respect each other more.:31:

Erol is right, these despicable acts happen all over the world. I once taught a child of 7 who had been involved in the porn industry in UK and forced to do so by its parents. Thankfully only once in 30 years but once too many. At least this child had been found by social services and removed from it's family. It happens wherever there is poverty or greed. I think we must be careful not to 'home in' on Turkey as this is even more prevalent in India and many African states. It seems from my reading that the Turkish government is trying to improve the rights of children and the education of girls but they have a great deal to do.

Does it matter you are her father or you are her f*cker? Everybody knows that there are frequent travels from rich lands of world to Tailand like places in the east where millions of child/teenage girls are being used in p*rn industry.

As sasa says it's child abuse wherever it happens. Just because it happens elsewhere is not an excuse for it happening in Turkey though. I don't think it's right for us to demonise Turkey because it happens there either. Maybe Erol thinks we are getting at Turkey in general and thank God it's only some of Turkey's people who behave in this way. It's wrong where ever it happens. It has happened for thousands of years and sadly I can't see how it can be eradicated anywhere - but we should at least try. I'm sure education is partly the answer to this but without a huge cash injection this will take a long time.

i was 25 years as a family Health Visitor working in small Welsh villages...and during that time i saw endless amounts of child abuse as well as more incest than people are aware of.

While this story is abhorent we have to look in our own backyard first...i mean look at the two kids before the courts this week in the Uk...who tortured two others the same age with savage depravity..and it happened in '' englands green and pleasant land''

Kaplumba, lets not misunderstand each others. I have been critisizing Turkey for decades. No, actually, critisizing islamic mentality in particular and religious mentality in general. In my one of previous posts, i mentioned a girl-13 yo "sold" to an old, escaped, hided herself in the chest, found there and killed by her family by knifes. Unforgattable story. News given by OP here is not much different. Turkey has not good record about these. If we say good, then, we are another killers of such girls. BUT... I just used this thread to attract the attentions to the world by saying "world is not much different."

If, in western world, economic dependency of female world to male world is 90%... It is 95% in eastern world like Turkey. So much difference!!! Where economic dependency of female world is so much all over the world, what can you expect? Civilization? Pass that.

I agree the world is not much different and I agree Shirl that we must also look in our own back yard although I don't believe girls are murdered or harmed by their families here in any thing like the numbers as some countries. In UK it is regarded as normal for a girl to go to school. Most I know have married (or not) a partner of their choosing. However we can't pass any child abuse off as OK and there is no point in saying it is worse here or there. It is bad anywhere. If people don't comment on any of it, it will just go on. The reason we are commenting on the child abuse in Turkey is because it's a Turkish Living Forum not a Philippine Living forum or even Welsh Living forum. I just can't imagine what it must be like for those children to be given to older men to do as they wish with. I know a few people who we have invited to holiday with us and they have refused saying they will not go anywhere where the rights of the child are ignored so much.

please check out this link and look at what is considered ok particularly in some of our euro partners countries.
I find it quite shocking but then i am conditioned to uk values and morals.

Age of consent

not quite on topic I know, but look at catholic spain, or austria or italy, some say it is ok if married ! in yemen you can get married at 9

certainly opens your eyes !

I am not talking about Turkey or indeed kids being killed or harmed but what if a culture is such that (certain parts of Afghanistan) the girls are kept at home and taught household chores whilst only the boys go to school. Is this acceptable?

I can't decide on that Philip and maybe in some societies it is important for children to be educated at home in activities that will be of most use for them. It depends on how much the role of homemaker is valued and the woman/girl respected. If they are treated as commodities to be exchanged or bartered, if they are beaten or murdered then of course it is wrong. Educated women I think are less likely to allow it to happen.

I see from Martins post that the age of consent is actually 18 in Turkey, higher than many other countries. It seems that the poor girl married to 2 men at the age of 13 was taken into care but I assume all the other marriages of young girls are not actually legal. Is much done to try and stop it?

Certainly not. But, tell this to religious mentality that wants to control people in general and females in particular. But, in Turkey, things have changed much. Only in rural areas of East, such things still happening. Religious mentality "invented" scarf now so that they still want to keep the females in universities under their control. Problem is religious mentality in general. Not only in Islam, but also Christian and other religious mentality. Muslim mentality goes worse when it comes to marriage of muslim female to nonmuslim male while they say ok to marriage of muslim male and nonmuslim female. Anyway, this is another story.
