Taiwan was established as an independent democratic nation in 1945 and China has been threatening to invade for more than 70 years - strange how brutal authoritarian regimes think their bluff will be accepted by the free world.

And interesting that Taiwan was expelled from the UN in 1971 in favour of China – looks as though another about turn could be on the books!

IMO sanctions on China would be pointless and only escalate tensions.

Meanwhile Wiki…

“China could invade Taiwan. Its military dwarfs the island nation's armed forces, but any invasion would likely be more akin to the brutal Allied WWII landings on Normandy than the swift victory of Operation Desert Storm in the first Gulf War in 1991.

Roughly 100 miles from China and around the size of Maryland, not only is the island of Taiwan surrounded by a protective watery moat, but it is also an island with geographic features that make it an extremely poor candidate for an invasion – no matter how powerful that invading force might be.

Observers note that that in 1944, the U.S. military scrapped Operation Causeway, a plan to invade Taiwan (then a Japanese colony called Formosa) because it was deemed too costly. U.S. military planners concluded that invading and holding Formosa would require a total American assault force of half a million men. The Pentagon tallied up the number of U.S. casualties expected from an invasion and subsequent mountain, jungle and urban fighting and that number was staggering being - as many as 150,000.

Taiwan has been preparing to be invaded since the 1950s, and as such has a solid intelligence apparatus, troops trained for the single mission of repelling Chinese forces, plenty of powerful modern military hardware and formidable defensives in place along every possible landing area. Due to the hilly terrain, the troops of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) would face pulverizing firepower raining down on them from heavily fortified defensive positions.

Sanctions? :):) When did sanctions ever deter invasion???

And what sanctions do you predict? Chinese sanctions against the US or US sanctions against China? Both nations are self sufficient in most needs so what is the point?

Pray tell O worldly wise one.

Jesus.... Not another thread where you'll go round and round with same points.

Just enough thread where you snipe but add nothing.

Has China taken any action?
China performed live-fire drills in the Taiwan Strait over the weekend and said it will conduct more during the remainder of this week. White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said China may use this as an excuse to fire missiles in the Taiwan Strait or near Taiwan.
But he said there would be no reason for this, as previous House speakers and other members of Congress have visited Taiwan in the past.

They’ve took action in the way of sanctions.
I was under the impression that Biden didn’t want Pelosi to go, that being on military advice. Bit surprised that the US doesn’t support Taiwan independence either.

Who has taken sanctıons agaınst who?
Reminds me of the story about the ant crawling up the elephant's ass with evil intentions.

Doubtless Biden was concerned for Pelosi' safety.

Wait until push turns to shove! :)

It is being reported that China is carrying out 'exercises' near Taiwan. Isn't this what Putin said before he invaded Ukraine?

Jeeez everything on shop shelves years back was either made in China or Taiwan.

We know where Covid originated from but it was China's lockdown(s) that screwed up supply chains, slowly coming out of that, a major trade war with China will put us all back to square one.

An 82 year old woman visits Taiwan and all hell lets loose lol

Xi having pronounced himself life time leader of China (so a dictator) has an ego about the same size as the country he stole. He apparently wants to do what no previous leader has done and take back Taiwan, so his name goes down in the history books.

A very dangerous man

The time is right with a weak president in the USA but the logistics of taking Taiwan are daunting and I think he's more worried about failing or being seen to have had to do it at a massive cost that he is about the USA.
