Can anybody tell me if the BEKO parent company name, Arçelik, translates into anything or can otherwise explain its origin.

I have googled and wikied to no avail and google translate doesn't help. Of course it may just be an abstract word but usually there is a reason behind a company name.

I only ask as it obviously raises an eyebrow when read by English speakers and I would love to be able to provide a positive comment to balance the humour.

That is a really good question!
It is funny how you use a brand name without thinking about it.
And I suspect you are not saying the name in Turkish- it should sound something like ARCH-ELICK! The c has a cedilla under it.
The "CHELIK part" means steel, so that name has made sense, but AR has no meaning that I can find, so a made-up brand name?

Chelik means steel...but as chrisbobs says the Ar has no meaning.

Thanks for the above, AR doesn't seem to relate to either the founders name nor the original town. Us lot recognise the change in sound the cedilla creates, but most brits would probably just ignore it. (So tempted to use the moonie smilie here)
