Activists Clash With Police In London
Thousands of anti-capitalist activists took to the streets of central London on Bonfire night to protest against "political oppression", with ten people arrested as masked marchers clashed with police.

There was a heavy police presence at both Trafalgar Square and Parliament Square, as well as along Whitehall, with officers carrying riot gear, but the protest began peacefully.

Nearby, a 66-year-old woman who gave her name as Maggie, from Plymouth, sat in her wheelchair in front of the parliament buildings clutching two posters protesting against the Government, her husband behind her. She said: "I have come along basically to say to the Government, 'enough is enough'. They are corrupt, they are bringing in so many austerity cuts, the welfare reform hasn't been thought out properly, yet Iain Duncan Smith seems to think it is working.

My sister and some other teachers were in London last night with 76 schoolchildren, aged 9/10. They had been to see The Lion King. These idiots were banging on the coach windows, leering in at them in their scarey masks. They should be ashamed. Most of them don't even know what they are protesting about.

If Brand and Vivienne Westwood don't like the UK government and the laws of this land then they should just leave. They talk about capitalism and poor people blah blah blah, both sitting on millions of pounds in their banks. Protesting is fine, it is the right of everyone on this country to protest, but there was no need to turn it into this ridiculous carry on. Yes, this country needs to change, but setting off fireworks from Nelson's Column is not the way to get that change. They just showed themselves up, and showed this country up also by behaving like idiots.

I am all for peaceful protests but I don't agree with violence or scaring people. I don't think the masks would scare the children as children wear masks themselves on halloween and some of the games children play on the internet and gaming consoles are hair raising, but banging on the coach windows is out of order.

Masks don't scare children as long as they know who is behind them. Voilent protests is not the way to go.

George Osborne has clearly stated that the UK is only half way through these "austerity measures". Theres a lot more to come yet. I watched IDS in front of a Home Affairs committee, such an uncaring ,up himself, arrogant tw~t.

I will say this. How many new words & phrases I have learned over the last few years? AND they all seem to relate to doom & gloom!!

I thought "clandestine" was a Scottish malt.

Ah, but these anti-capitalists are not too shy about taking all sorts of benefits, mostly provided by us hard working capitalists !!

Bit of a sweeping statement , not born of prejudice , surely ?

Not all anti-capitalists are unemployed and not all claim benefits, in my experience many are employed - they care about people and about what is happening in the world. Just because people don't want to be conditioned and fall into line with what the powers that be want this does not make them bad people. I remember students used to protest and let people know what was really going on before the days of the internet. Some protesters may well go too far but they are no worse than some people leaving pubs and clubs in some city centres on a Saturday night and no worse than some football fans - that does not make bad behaviour right but it is not only protesters who go too far.

I would love to know what the alternative is to capitalism.......

beyazbayan created a link to a list of "different" types of capitalism. Perhaps one of those would do?

Try a search engine, works for me, maybe it will work for you. I use DuckDuckGo.com (yeh, a silly name) I typed "alternatives to capitalism" and got lots of hits. Just a sprinkling are below:

Is There an Alternative to Capitalism?
Edited from a rough transcript of a talk given as part of the SMAC forum on "Alternatives to Capitalism" (Wednesday, April 11th, 2001)

"Is there an alternative to capitalism?" The short answer to the question is "yes." In fact, there are many alternatives, though not all of these are necessarily or equally desirable."

Possible Alternatives for Capitalism? | A conversation on TED.com
"...the question becomes, if socialism/communism overly focuses on the cooperative part of the human psyche, and capitalism overly focuses on the competitive nature of humanity, and this is the reason why neither are highly successful in a general, historical sense, then wouldn't the best system by a combination of both parts of the psyche, i.e. a system that simultaneously encourages both cooperation and competition within one unified framework?"

Participatory Economics - A Theoretical Alternative to Capitalism
"Michael Albert and Robin Hahnel have created a well-developed theoretical system—participatory economics..."

What are the alternatives to capitalism?
"Social anarchist thought generally emphasizes community and social equality. Libertarian socialists believe in converting present-day private property into the commons or public goods, while retaining respect for personal property."

Lots more answers are available if you are further interested.

Thank you ME & BB for some interesting reading - I particularly liked the Paul Burrows article.

But imho wherever this topic goes there are two maxims that cannot be ignored ..

1. Money makes the world go around &
2. The poor are always with us

In my simplistic & perfect world I would suggest that no clear line should be drawn between communism & capitalism - an ideal state should have a combination of both headed up by a benign dictator (like myself :))

But I can only think of one country where this combination has been adopted … Singapore.
