Days On The Beach in Side
29 October Banks Shut + 10 Nov Event
On October 29, 1923, the Turkish constitution was amended and Turkey became a republic. This formally declared the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire. Republic Day (Cumhuriyet Bayramı) is celebrated throughout Turkey every year. Commemorative events usually begin in the afternoon on the previous day. It is a special day for them so, banks and government buildings and schools close for a day.

Celebrations usually begin the afternoon of the day before and include parades etc.

10th NOVEMBER = While not a national holiday (maybe the Turkish government lost their enthusiasm for dedicating holidays at this point) the death of Ataturk at 9.05 on the morning of 10th November 1938 is recognised throughout Turkey, marked by 5 minutes' silence.

This website summarises the reforms of Ataturk, which goes some way to showing how radical the changes were that Ataturk brought to Turkey (not to mention founding it in the first place) - not a bad track record for one person! Oh yes, and a lot of nationalist fervour as well. :hmm:
