14 Caribbean nations sue Britain, Holland and France
Britain is being sued with France and the Netherlands by 14 Caribbean countries which are demanding what could be hundreds of billions of pounds in reparations for slavery.

Around 175 years after Britain freed its last slaves in the West Indies, an alliance of Caribbean nations is demanding to be repaid for the 'awful', lingering legacy of the Atlantic slave trade.

Caricom, a group of 12 former British colonies together with the former French colony Haiti and the Dutch-held Suriname, believes the European governments should pay – and the UK in particular.

Caricom has not specified how much money they are seeking but senior officials have pointed out that Britain paid slave owners £20 million when it abolished slavery in 1834. That sum would be the equivalent of £200 billion today.

It just goes to show, how far this culture of suing for just about everything has gone... What next, England, Germany and France suing Italy for the Roman invasion.

Surely the Statute of Limitations has to come into this somewhere - or does it only apply to individuals? (But Nazi war criminals are still being brought to book nearly 70 years on) :der: :der: :der:

Still living war criminals is a far cry from 175 year plus crimes..This appears to be a claim against a Country not an individual, if this upheld there are many other Nations involved in this and other atrocities. Besides the fact that many of the slaves originated from African nations such as what is now The Gambia, so if anyone does have a claim surely it would be the African Nations... Utter nonsense.

One of the Ironic things is that at the time of abolition very generous compensation was paid, but the compensation was paid to the slave owners, a little bit of research will give you the names of the wealthy families that got wealthier with the reparations

David Cameron's family was one such family.

They should sue the Arab nations as well as they were the biggest dealers in slavery.
But they know they would be wasting their time there.
Ignore them, they must be running out of ganga money.

I think you have hit the nail on the head. This is not about compensating those that suffered under slavery because they are long dead, it's about propping up the by an large failing economies of those Nations.

Not forgetting the Barbary Corsairs who took millions of European slaves to North Africa

Interesting point Teresa, I wasn't aware of these numbers..

So how about the native Americans suing the UK, amongst others, for the theft of their land?

This could go on for ever with all nations finding something to sue another one for.

O for Gods sake get over it............i might agree with some of this if the people who did this were still alive and could be sued. What a load of nonsense i get fed up of hearing about what happened hundreds of years ago.
